In The Martian, no one dies. In PHM, his other two crew members died, but the movie didn't do anything to develop and make you care about them. Everything else is pulling punches, someone could die but doesn't, things could get really bad on earth but we're not shown any of it, everyone gets a happy ending. It's the #1 thing keeping me from firmly ranking this above Interstellar or Gravity or Ad Astra
