It's literally just knowing people, or being related to them. In some cases, fucking somebody. That's basically it. If you're the assistant to someone important for years, like 5+ years, you meet everyone they meet and a lot of times end up having 10 minute phone calls with a studio VP or a decently famous actor.
Actors, and I literally mean most actors, have multiple scripts they've written or at least one-sheeted, and they're usually pretty lame, but if they're super into it and super dumb they will try to rope you into the project in some capacity if they know you, and I'm pretty familiar with a lot actors.

Whenever an actor has a meltdown or some OD scare or gets a DUI, and if it hurts production in meaningful way like a shooting delay, it's almost always going to be a production assistant who gets punished for it. Especially with younger (like sub-25) actors, you're sometimes expected to be their babysitter essentially and you have to keep them from getting trashed or fucking too much or bring their boyfriend/girlfriend on set if they're known to have crazy arguments.
We have dossiers on people and I know of multiple instances where studios have sent people to show at a guy's apartment and beat his ass so he'll break up with an actress and stop distracting her from her work.
But that's not to say nobody's doing drugs, nobody cares about coke or shit like that, it's the depressants that we have to watch out for.

When I was younger, I had a dead end job as a janitor at a mall. It wasn’t too bad, I just went around emptying bins and mopping up spilled bubble teas. I accidentally stumbled onto an active film set at Stone Mountain park in Atlanta, Georgia a few years ago and I could never find out afterwards what show it was for. I've tried multiple times to figure out but there's no like carmdb type website for shooting locations as far as I'm aware.
It was set in the 60s (they had a bunch of 60s cars parked out front which is what we first saw so we thought there was some event going on) and they were filming a police shootout/raid at the museum there. Some crew member pulled me and my sister into the building to get us out of frame and we watched out the window as they shot a take then we got kicked out.

It's really interesting seeing systems when not involved in them. Like I worked at a factory to pay for college and I could drive the forklift on this wet metal bridge thing and the factory director yelled at me, threatened to fire me and I didn't give a single shit since I was going back to school in 3 days anyway. He didn't even know that I wasn't licensed on the forklift but they had no one else, so I would drift it with boxes of metal hinges for doors.
