the feeling of dread they tried to play on in HL1 where they setup the aliens as the only enemy and then revealed that not only the aliens but the military were trying to kill you was just masterful. the betrayal and ultimatum under duress of the G-Man at the end of game was also masterful. HL2 completely throws that out of the window and the glimpses we get of the original direction seem so much better than what we got.
