I low key think they ruined it at the very end of season 1 when they made Rick crazy party man.
There's a stark difference between "he's like Doc Brown, but he's insane and maybe evil", and "dude, he like gets fucked up on drugs and parties harder than anyone!"
That was exactly when Dan Harmon started self-inserting.
