I don't know how to explain it but how come we don't have any "literary" films anymore? I just watched Seventh Seal and the dialogue all seemed a lot more erudite, a lot more poetic, a lot more profound. Obviously this isn't how real people sound but I feel movies are trying far too hard to be realistic in their dialogue and acting when literature for example has no such concern.

It's because you don't see any discussion on /tv/ about them. If anyone tries to discuss an "artistic" or "literary" movie on /tv/ everyone calls him a pseud or a redditor
>>

Watch better movies. Obviously, society has gotten more impolite and less literate, but if you know how to look for it, you can find plenty of what you're talking about.
>>
>>220066575
the most annoying thing is that everyone just floods to coomer threads and culture war threads over actual film and tv discussion. i've even noticed that in the arthouse threads where so many of the posts there are just waifuposting wasting time.

/film/ is full of mentally ill people. Trouble with generals.
>>
>>220067309
that's how it is on any board. try discussing classical music on /mu/ and someone will inevitably call you a "sister"

Have you been to college? Writers these day write queer stuff with a bunch of philosophy shit thrown in. One of the books we had to read in college was Jean Genet's "Quarelle" and I didn't even finish that book. But I'm pretty sure some students finished that book in like 7 hours, same type of student writing about a queer guy attending nightclubs and bars and philosophizing.

Are you stupid? There is a daily thread about those artsy type of movies. Also, movies and shows like "Raised by Wolves" got discussed here when that show was airing.
>>
i prefer stuff like the sopranos. the characters talk like idiots, but the poetry is in the story and its world and symbolism. the characters are stupid, but the story is literary. best kind. but i do love good literary dialogue too.

Are you talking about /film/? Because if you are then lol
>>

I just happened to watch it for the first time two days ago. It was good and had a couple great parts but just made me want to rewatch a similar movie, yet better in everyway, Sansho the Bailiff.

this board is mostly americunts, canucks and spics, who all have dogshit taste in cinema
you can't even discuss the most famous non-americunt films here, let alone anything more obscure
>>

Have you SEEN the inside of a movie theater lately?
>>
>>220066335
For anyone who hasn't watched this film. It's not good. The "playing chess with death" is sort of a cool idea. But plays a very tiny role and this image itself is a better experience than watching the movie.
If you like that idea I recommend watching The Sandman instead which has a lot of similar things in it and it's actually good. (although varies by episode)

>Jean Genet's "Quarelle" and I didn't even finish that book
Shame, it's a very good book, his writing style was great

I've never read Querelle but the film adaptation by R.W. Fassbinder is good.

I tried again this month and liked it even less.

Nobody cares. Why can’t you just watch the movie and shut the hell up?

I went into the movie assuming it would be like a more highbrow version of Slumdog Millionaire, where the chess is a framing device and von Sydow's moves are informed by the battles he's fought and his other life experiences

Drive My Car is literary enough. The best use of the done to death Uncle Vanya texts.

Another thing is death/life were valid question to modernists. These themes were almost done to death by the 70s (can you get any bloodier than Pekinpah, and still ponder the "big questions"? And religious metaphors are seen as cheesy cliches except in sci-fi - again, 2001 asked that on the biggest scale possible. Only Japs have the post-apoclyptic life/death to ask.) Postmodern dgaf about anything.

How tf is there always so many people trying to argue with the simple fact that American (western) society is seeing degradation in the arts. It's so blatant and extreme but they always try to cite X or Y trash modern film like they're even remotely similar to artistic films from before modern times.

Reading and by extension all symbolic analysis has become something which is despised by 99% of people.
