The Man in Yellow isn’t a monster, he’s something closer to an editor or a senior actor who’s done enough laps to recognize the script; he announces his “favourite part” is coming because he genuinely knows what’s next. Smiley regrowing inside Fatima after being killed is the giveaway for how the rules work: you can’t kill a recurring character, the story just recasts them. The boy in white literally changing appearance is the same idea made visible — a role being filled by different actors across iterations. (Julie’s storywalking isn’t the proof here, since that seems to be in-story time travel — the Man in Yellow likely remembers her from a meeting that’s in his past but in her future, within this same iteration.)Crucially, the story runs in layers. Each cycle laminates a new framework over the previous one, and older versions bleed through. The old huts aren’t ruins — they’re a previous iteration’s set still poking through the current one. The townspeople suffer so a narrative can continue; the narrative continues because viewers keep watching.
