>>220084814Cats is a very successful musical that ran continuously for decades. The issue is it's 100% made for the theater, it's basically a Broadway show for tourists who only see one Broadway show, it's entirely songs one after the other with more or less no plot, and is completely focused on colorful outfits and dances. This makes for a nice tourist show, but it's not so great for a movie, where some kind of narrative is required and it needs a good musical director too. Hooper did Le Miserables, had success, thought he could do Cats as well. But Le Mis is a very cinematic theater play already, and being adapted from a novel means it has a firm, compelling narrative all the way through. And I think Le Mis the film was carried pretty hard by the actors and production design anyway, there's plenty of issues with it as an adaptation and as a film.The only way Cats might have worked, was when Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment was working on it as an animated film in the early 90s. Being animated would have made it easy to translate the theater costumes into cartoon cat designs, and it could be a breezy 80 or 90 minutes with some nice animation, people put less expectation on animated films narratively. Didn't get made in the end.

The whole Jellicle Ball is basically a death-cult myth the cats have made up to cope with older cats dying, having hope in form of their community electing one cat to be reborn. But the songs, as in pretty much every musical, are more about the characters than they are about the plot, and that's why Cats works so well in the medium: Its conflicts are not external conflicts of plotlines, but internal conflicts of character arcs. What's presented are different character archetypes that have their equivalent in how human beings life their lives. And that much was already true for the poems the whole thing is based on. But with the addition of Grizzabella, you now also get a counterpoint, and thus something to drive the plot forward and give it an additional dimension.

It works in the theater as a variety of different song and dance numbers, but as a film it's a little threadbare. They even had to add in more of a plot with Macavity in the movie with him abducting more cats so there might be some sort of third act, rather than him just appearing for his song like everyone else and then he's done.

Hooper thought exactly like you did and that's why he made up some bullshit extra plot about Victoria (who isn't even much of a character in the musical), including some ridiculous romance teasing, or the thing you mentioned about Macavity. Would have worked better without either.
