I havent seen any of his others film. This one doesn't have any merit other than some good looking scenes when camera stays still, which it never does and the scenes aren't that good looking. everything jumping around and positioning of thing is overly methodical and mechanic, which I find silly. Maybe it represents fitting into order and fascism, but I still think it's stupid and doesn't work well.
Plot isn't even worth discussing, it's very boring. at times it attempt to be profound but fails miserably.

Just got out of a shitty movie at the theater so I wanna bring up a better one I watched the other night: Dark City (director's cut) starring pre-waxed 90s JCon and Richard O'Brien of Rocky/Shocky fame; the former looked stunning and the latter sufficiently hammed it up as the alien villain.
It tried to be four different things at once (neo-noir, sci fi, thriller, action) and while the film didn't fully succeed at any of them, I still enjoyed the overall hodgepodge and have to respect Proyas' ambitious worldbuilding. It reminded me of Weir's Truman Show at times.

Dark City is McDonald's sharthouse if we're being honest here.
>>
>>220112965
That's a good one, but gobbledygook is even better.
>>
Dark City is rad. Hollywood was so disgustingly rich in the late 90s they could just churn out any kind of film they wanted.
>>
Proyas was an unsung vulgar auteur and should've been championed instead of Paul W.S. Anderson.

It's Fritz Lang, it's F.W. Murnau, it's Terry Gilliam, it's Straub-Huillet, it's Jean Cocteau, it's Alain Resnais, it's the Wachowski hermanxs, it's Karel Zeman, it's Chris Marker, it's Marguerite Duras, it's Victor Erice, it's Raul Ruiz, it's John Huston, it's Philippe Grandrieux, it's Apichatpong Weerasethakul, it's Jaco Van Dormael, it's...........
........ it's true cinema, avant-garde, boundary pushing, challenging and yet compelling. And naturally rejected by normalcattle and crypto-normalfaggots on here. I spit on you.

The issue with “Dark City” was that while the film was visually stunning, the film lacked the emotional depth and inherent character empathy of many if the films of these directors, and it also lacked the depth of “The Fifth Element” which was made and released around the same time as Dark City”.
>>
>>220114856
Dark City is just a big budget remake of Godards Alphaville- aliens who don’t understand how emotions work set up a dictatorship which rules over unsuspecting people

It’s pretty much Alphabille and World in a wire put together.

Recommend me some underrated Herzog joints. He's directed 78 flicks and even the deep cuts are bangers (or at least the ones I've seen).

Have you seen Woyzeck and The Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner?
>>

I have Woyzeck and Cobra verde (the only Herzog/Kinski collaboration I've never seen discussed) downloaded but I haven't watched them yet. I'll check out Woodcarver as well. Thanks.

>The Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner?
Some of the greatest film music ever.
>>
>>220116560
Woyzeck is kind of an oddity in his filmography, formally it's very different from his usual style, which is probably why it's my favourite of his; superb mise en scène and possibly Kinski's best performance.

Guys I'm an hour and twenty minutes into Magnolia and it's just a fucking assault on my senses. Is it worth finishing? For the first 45 minutes or so I was interested in how it would all fit together, now it's taking too long and it feels like every scene is just about building tension and discomfort with no rest. It's exhausting and I don't give a shit about the kid, the grown-up child genius, or Julianne Moore. Wat do?
