the film's failure probably bummed him out a lot. i do remember there being a trend of cinematographers being handed mid to big budget movies in the early 2010s as their first feature.

A similar example might be the $40 million AVP Requiem being directed by The Brothers Strause, who before then had never directed anything and were VFX artists. They would go on to also direct the piece of shit Skyline (2010) and nothing else
