I don't have any emotional attachment to him or his work, so I can look at his stuff mostly objectively. He is a UNIQUE presence in all of his media. Even something like 'The Wiz,' which is kind of a mess. He has an aura of weight and sadness to him which kind of makes him seem 'bigger' than his slender frame and delicate speaking voice would otherwise suggest. His visual presentation was almost messianic in a certain way. Physical poses, the themes in a bunch of songs, the wardrobe, etc. I get the sense that people imputed some kind of spiritual significance to him.It's also interesting that he didn't release very many albums during his career. Elvis or Sinatra fans have dozens of studio albums to play with; Jackson fans have 10. And 4 of those are from his adolescence; he only made 6 studio albums as an adult. No one else ever had that combination of messianic imagery, weird distinctive presence, and sparse recording career which led fans to fixate very intensely on a limited pool of material.
