This is going to sound completely insane but hear me out: I think the movie Gattaca, while primarily a character drama, could have a subtle political message against eugenics hidden in its subtext.
>>
>>220098124
its pro eugenics, because Ethan Hawke had a heart attack in space and got everyone on his mission killed.
there's a reason the benchmark is that high and they need super soldiers, he cheated his way into it and everybody else paid the price.
>>
>>220098124
It's pro-eugenics, only those who are perfect get to do things like go to space. The message is that eugenics is based, it just needs universal application and ruthlessness to bear fruit.
>>
>>220098163
>Ethan Hawke had a heart attack in space and got everyone on his mission killed.
didn't happen, that's just your shitty headcanon made with the sole purpose of justifying being a nazi
>>220098174
we are currently going to space with no eugenics required whatsoever
>>
>>220098124
it might be saying that if eugenics was allowed then even people who choose not to or can't afford it will be inspired to try their hardest, and laziness will slowly disappear from humanity.
>>
>>220098453
no, it's saying that people who are born modified become complacent and morally defective
>>
>>220098292
>we are currently going to space with no eugenics required whatsoever
The selection process is just as drastic, the result is the same.
>>
Memes aside, wouldn't a genetically optimized human have a black skin? I'm not talking about race or anything, but isn't a black skin more convenient when protecting people from sunlight and such?
>>
>>220099035
you need spacesuits to breath on other planets, those will also be doing your radiation repelling.
>>
>>220098981
not to mention that if we want to make a city in the moon, the people living there will have to use a ton of drugs to not lose all the muscle and bone in a month.
>>
>>220099035
We evolved white skin to live in high latitudes where the sun isn't constantly shining directly on us, in order to maximize vitamin synthesis.

It's easier to wear long sleeves in the summer than supply vitamins to the entire population forever.
>>
>>220098163
There is a lot of redundancies in space missions. One death doesn't result in deaths of other people. His task would be done by someone else.
>>
I'm convinced that opposition to eugenics falls almost exclusively on midwits and, at the risk of being redundant, religious types.

Morons have the Dunning-Kruger effect going on and will assume they're smart, capable, and worthy enough to pass on their genes. Smart people realize that eugenics have been an unstated reality for thousands of years.
But the midwits immediately get triggered emotionally and evoke baseless Nazi culling imagery and are incapable of considering the ramifications of limitless breeding, to include the severely disabled.

My favorite scene is when the 12 fingered pianist play a piano piece that can be only played by 12 fingers. Because they took a Schhubert piece that was perfect and added extra notes that turn it into utter shit.
Reinforcing the idea that 10 fingered people are beautiful and 12 fingered are ugly genetic freaks.
>>
>>220099250
Obviously health matters, but things can still go wrong even when you send healthy people. They would be prepared for that.
>>
>>220099162
you might be right. if you look into who is behind so much of the mass immigration in western countries from the 3rd world, it's christian organizations housing and paying for their transportation in.
>>
It's pro will to power Nietzscheanism. It's anti materialism as well, plato was an eugenicist but still thought all of the strology could not be accounted for and known.
>>
>>220098124
>DUDE ASSIMILATION ANXIETY LMAO

There are astrological and kabaala tropes present, yeah. Pay attention to support cast that help Hawk along the way.

>>220098163
>he crossed the Abyss to Ein Sof Aur and rocket-of-peaced the hideous blonde beasts en route!
>>

well, true. but also another ethno-religious group.
>>
>>220099162

>>

What are the downsides to eugenics?
>>
>>220099895
your hands get dirty when you have to brutally murder the chudcels trying to enforce who can have a family and who cannot
>>
>>220099895
who would regulate the process and the rules?
each country, and the interests and priorities of a country and the people are rarely the same
>>
>>220099895
>What are the downsides to eugenics?
We don't really know how everything is connected, so if you start messing around with one gene, you might end up with some horrible snowball effect that won't be discovered until years later when half the population suddenly starts going blind because they heard a loud noise.

we are alreday doing "low level" eugenics killing every downie who could live, with abortions, and sellecting the embrios we like the most with in vitro clinics.
we dont need DNA edition.

>>220099639
Which has been solely elevated into power by Christcucks.
>>
>>220100429
You are being dishonest, only adressing the safe edgy choice
>>
>>220100244
>who would regulate the process and the rules?
why, the rich and powerful of course! it just so happens that the BASED and REDPILLED elon musk is already doing eugenics! his end game is having every person living on earth be his descendants, so if there's ever a government program that mandates who can procreate then have fun raising elon jr after your own seed gets marked as unviable, cuck
>>
>>220098163
>its pro eugenics, because Ethan Hawke had a heart attack in space and got everyone on his mission killed.

He already proved he doesn't have a heart condition though. What everyone including him was worried about was the potential of it and he proved everyone and himself wrong.
>>
>>220100697
euthanasia can be also considererated eugenics, specially if the person didnt have kids.
like that case in Spain of that girl that was killed because she was weak and the country didnt feel like paying a nurse 24/7 for her.
>>
>>220100832
That is equally safe-edgy adressing
>>
>>220100429
>we are alreday doing "low level" eugenics killing every downie who could live
I assume we're going to learn too late that downies were exuding some kind of undetectable vapor that kept everyone else from chimping out and they were serving a vital role in keeping humanity advancing.

That's a problem with execution, not theory. That's like arguing space exploration is bad because space shuttles are dangerous.
>>220100276
That's a stupid reductive point. Eugenics doesn't have to be this exaggerated fascistic enterprise where every single member of the populace is enlisted into a campaign to artificially select for individual genes. Simply encouraging some members NOT to reproduce, or heavily disincentivizing via policy, would be a eugenic measure.

Funny, because in reality geniuses skew religious along with based retards. It's the atheists like you who occupy the middle.
>>

lmao
>>
>>220101126
I'm not an atheist. And geniuses tending to skew religious, according to your sourceless assertion, doesn't really help your dismissal of eugenics.
>>
>>220100809
nigga please he almost had a heart attack from brisk walking at the gym and is blind as a mole without his contacts.
he is a liability and puts the mission at risk just because hes a stubborn asshole and a cheater.

the eugenics issue is massively overblown, because it will only be a problem for a generation or two until everyone has the genetic improvements and the "natural" geezers die from old age.
oh no, the elder zoomer cant go to space and has to do a blue collar job because his nephew can run a mile in 3 minutes and is more suited for being an astronaut! what an unfair world!

gattaca is peak "le everyone can be a hero" cringe slop. "just cheat if you cant make it" is the message of the film, its laughably retarded. still a good movie tho

He beat his brother in swimming and actually saved him from drowning. Like oh no his heart beats faster than normal, but he shows that he can power through it.
>>
>>220101208
How can Ethan be a liability if he passed all the training requirements?
>>
>>220100901
The OG question was
>"What are the downsides of eugenics?"
And your two examples to cull are
>Retards with malfunctioning brains
>Women with severe depression or some fuckd up life-destroying trama
This are "safe edgy" choices in my view, because people is already inclined to say "Well yeah may as well put them out of their misery"
You should add "Horse with a broken leg" and "child rapist" to the list of things most people would agree on with minimal effort and minimal moral compromise.
I will not engage with your tip of the iceberg understanding of the scope of eugenics
>>
>>220101283
Science is a false god. Industrial society has an approaching expiration date that science is unable to delay.
It must be so frustrating to have your perfectly constructed strawman crumble because reality is more complex than your perceptions.
>>
>>220101357
It sounds like you're mad anon is not proposing laughably extreme positions that you can then strawman.
Hate to break it to you, but eugenics is about sane policy, not being edgy. Sometimes it really is as simple as advocating euthanasia or abortion for severely disabled people with no hope for a painfree life.
>>
>>220101338
being a good celestial navigator is pointless if you're gonna die from the 9Gs in the rocket going up there.
space travel is insanely hard on your body, they didnt have these requirements for fun, they are necessary to guarantee a safe mission.
his academic credentials dont matter if his body will fail him on the years long journey.
>>
>>220101357
well,I am being safe because I dont like eugenics, and also this things have the tendency to be controlled an altered by the priorities of countries and capitalism in general, which is a problem.
But when one country starts doing it,others will have to follow or their people will be in disadvantage so we will have to deal with it.
>>
>>220098124
>while primarily a character drama, could have a subtle political message against eugenics hidden in its subtext
I DONT BELIEVE YOU ANON
joke aside there is one even more subtle message, albeit unintentional... the thing is that I loved the movie when I saw it on TV as a kid... loved it on DVD too... but when I got the Bluray, well, everything looks "crusty" (in lack of a better word)... while they obviously put effort into it, the details are all... off... striking an inharmonious note with the intended "focus on perfection and cleanliness" their society intends to represent, at least in that space shuttle city
anyway I have no idea if it's because the creators are the show
>had sensory problems
>didn't know they could do better
>they could do better but chickened out (e.g. making the "wrong point")
>ran out of money/motivation
>it's just how they imagine utopia
>was a communist / UK thing
>was a subtle point being made
>was a passive-aggressive point made by someone else
>other explanation
anyway I can no longer watch it, I've seen porn clips shot in bathrooms or run down hotel rooms that looked less unhygienic

also Ethan Hawke is a repulsive dweeb
>>
>>220101320
>He beat his brother in swimming
It's more that his brother wasn't willing to risk drowning to win their race

"I never left anything for the swim back" or something like that
>>
>>220098292
>no eugenics whatsoever
When they select the first space colonists, do you think they will choose the kind of people who just let the smoke alarm keep beeping instead of changing the battery?
>>
File: hqdefault.jpg (29 KB, 480x360)

>>220102131
It depends. Is the trait associated with being unbothered by smoke detector beeping beneficial or neutral for the mission? Is the trait associated with the presumed lack of proactivity detrimental enough on its own?
Remember the first space travelers, anon.
