DFW's comments about Lynch just reveal him to be a film philistine. He describes Lynch as some completely original and totally unique director whose artistic output is incomparable to anyone else, but anyone who actually knows film understand that Lynch's films, while special in their own way, were clearly building on the work of prior filmmakers, most obviously Luis Bunuel (though I think Lynch ludicrously and completely implausibly insisted that he'd never seen a Bunuel film.)
