This is one of the unsettling things about a Lynch movie: You don't feel like you're entering into any of the standard unspoken and/or unconscious contracts you normally enter into with other kinds of movies. You almost never from a Lynch movie get the sense that the point is to "entertain" you, and never that the point is to get you to fork over money to see it.

why do Lynch fans get mad when you point this out?

I hope you're joking and you know who David Foster Wallace is

DFW's comments about Lynch just reveal him to be a film philistine. He describes Lynch as some completely original and totally unique director whose artistic output is incomparable to anyone else, but anyone who actually knows film understand that Lynch's films, while special in their own way, were clearly building on the work of prior filmmakers, most obviously Luis Bunuel (though I think Lynch ludicrously and completely implausibly insisted that he'd never seen a Bunuel film.)

What are the lynchiest non-Lynch films?

can you red pill me on this. what are the most obvious parallels between him and lynch's movies

I think Jean Cocteau is a better comparison, but yeah, Lynch was absolutely familiar with that kind of work.

Bunuel was really the pioneer of using jarring and dreamlike imagery prominently, often even as a substitute for any sort of logical narrative. There are obviously other filmmakers who experimented with this before and after him, but he was the quintessential surrealist director and so I refuse to believe that Lynch, as a surrealist director himself, was not influenced by him.

Good point, Cocteau is even more on the mark.

Have you seen his earlier films? Some of the shots in them could probably be inserted straight into Eraserhead without anyone noticing something's wrong.

Lynch definitely wanted to entertain with his mystery storytelling. Problem is that the mystery never went anywhere and didn't really make sense. And way too much Laura Dern.

Lynch is 80% shmaltzy americana daytime soap overacting and 20% surrealist horror. This ratio tends to be adjusted based on the project, but he figured out a formula and stuck to it. And the formula is highly effective. The surrealism draws just enough out of daytime acting to make it uncanny and push it into horror.

Breen is operating with the same parameters but has no innate artistic sensibility so it comes out as amateurish shlock, but it still has enough soul to be enjoyable.

Another director that is working with this kind of cinematic alchemy is Alex van Warmerdam and I highly recommend his movies.
A couple more are Alice Rohrwacher and Kristoffer Borgli.

I find DUNE quite entertaining.
Especially the Evil Underpants scene.
Just look at those anon. Do they look comfortable? No. Do they look practical? No. Do they look evil? Hell yes.

Lynch movies are entertaining though. How can you not see the comedy in them? Lynch was a highly funny man. everything he ever did is laced with comedy.

The mystery is the point, anon. Just like dreams. I assume by "never went anywhere" you mean "no one ever shows up to explain everything to you like the Architect in the Matrix." Wanting answers is natural, but I promise you none of Lynch's movies would have been improved by that.
