They sort of nailed it with the opening in the force awakens where Finn witnesses the brutality in the raid on Jakku village. (yeah yeah I know it's just a Saving Private Ryan knock off) This darker, realistic, more grounded tone could have really worked if they committed to it but they immediately juxtaposed it with the dumbest marvel-quip filled bullshit imaginable for the rest of the movie while cashing in on retarded boomers childhood memories. I think if they focused on this brutal realism during the action sequences and showed some restraint during the build-up drama scenes, they could have had something special.
