When you've been trained and ready to go from apprentice/journeyman you would craft something that demonstrates your skill as a Master. So if you were a blacksmith you might make a badass sword that exists just so you can hang it on the wall so people coming in can see your capabilities. It's not the greatest thing you'll ever make, it's just the first really good thing you made.
