Compared to pretty much every European country (including countries with considerably fewer inhabitants) they have a low amount of good films and filmmakers and no entries in the world cinema canon, except for maybe Spoorloos. Verhoeven's American films are the only films by a Dutch filmmaker to have any kind of international relevance and following.Time will tell with Babygirl, which was directed by a Dutch woman.

>>220125628Same goes for literature and music (except for electronic music) too. The Netherlands is a bit weird. Strong output in athletics, technology, science and other things. However the entertainment industry sucks.Movies/shows here are subbed and people speak English well, maybe that is a reason too.I think some countries are just not being serious about it. The modern German and Italian film outputs are also mediocre compared to British and French ones.
