No it doesn't? The only thing the Directors cut includes are weird ass esoteric visuals and tiny bit of insight into Grandma Death's book about time travel. From what I've theorized and gathered, is that """"The Universe"""" that we live in can become corrupted from time to time, and when that happens "the universe" turns off free will and starts selecting people to fix everything. "The chosen one's" body is then taken over so that they can complete the tasks to fix everything, and everyone around them unconsciously becomes his aid in trying to correct things. Sometimes "the chosen one" can become self aware, like Grandma Death, and eventually Donnie. When Donnie finally does become self aware, he realizes dying once the world "resets" will have a net positive, so he does it.

From what I remember, the Director's cut sheds light on the fact that people can "remember" their vessel life from before the reset, which explains why everyone at the end is crying or reflecting, or suddenly "waking up". (Theyre remembering bits of their life before the reset.) Other than that, nothing else is really revealed or explained.

The tl;dr is that sometimes parallel (pocket) universes get created because of a glitch in time.

This pocket universe is unstable and collapses eventually. The copied people in the pocket universe kind of turn into NPCs while one person becomes the protagonist (Donnie).

Donnie surviving the plane crash creates a pocket universe and the movie plays in that pocket universe. He has to accept that this reality will be destroyed and in the end he accepts that he was meant to die. It's all very teenage doom and gloom. The feeling that you are supposed to experience is being in a hopeless situation and accepting your own demise

To add to this most of the movie is the world basically manipulating him into closing the pocket universe. All those black outs are the world setting events that will to him getting with the girlfriend, getting his little sister on the plane and getting his girlfriend killed so that he will send the engine though the portal.

In the movie it's a small temporary copy of the real universe.
A "parallel universe" might be a better term, except it isn't real fully self-contained universe that can exist on its own. It only exists temporarily in order to fix a glitch in the proper universe.
