"Okay kid, just act like you're dead, and we're going to spin the thing around. Action!" He must have sensed on some level that he was participating in something evil (and been a little excited to do so).

I would draw your attention to another detail. In the second movie, Channard's study is lovingly decorated as Frankenstein's lab, with books, bones and the like. One of the props that you can clearly make out for a half-second as William Hope (Gorman from Aliens) investigates, is a larger reproduction of a tarot card, pic related. It is the "Six of Disks", or pentacles. It's off to the side in a pan IIRC, but very clear when you watch closely.This is a really good prop choice because the points in the central circular element suggest an isometric image of a cube, like the box itself. But also notice the sharper, oblong diamond-shapes behind. These are suggestive of how the cubic box is reshaped into the long diamond-thing, an image of Leviathan.
