The man, the myth, the legend.
>>
>>220138017
He may seem like one of the good ones but he still hijacked the show
>>
Is this the most a show has ever been derailed by a new character's popularity?
>>
>>220138017
Why isn't Carl respected as the Ideal Black Dad the way Uncle Phil is?
>>
I never watched the show but I assume he was the main character

It's very "Homer was the main character of The Simpsons until Bart was"
>>

He was a cop.

what the title of the show meant to be read as "Family Matters" as in matters relating to a family or "Family Matters" as in family is something that matters?
>>
>>220138184
Yes.
>>
>>220138116
Carl spends most of the show going on wacky Urkel adventures with an otherwise normal, usually well behaved family
Uncle Phil had to go upside Will Smith's delinquent head more often than not
>>
>>220138184
yeah, the bigger love of the family

When I was a kid I 100% assumed that Family Matters was a sequel to Die Hard
As an adult I'm still pretty sure this is true, that Carl drove home from helping Bruce Willis throw a bunch of Europeans off a skyscraper and ended up having to deal with Urkel
>>
>>220138184
It kind of lost its meaning around the Bruce Lee clone episode

Now that the dust has settled did he really do that?

He did deface the locker.

Yes, I too love Sonic the Hedgehog.

How does his brief appearance as a cop in Ghostbusters fit into the carl Winslow universe?

Honestly without Urkel the show would have failed. The first season is just so fucking boring and drab. There's literally an episode where Laura sells a quilt and the grandma gets mad because it was a family heirloom. Urkel transformed the show into something wild and fun. Yeah, they went completely off the rails in later seasons with the robots and transformation chamber and time travel, but people loved it because it was fun.
>>
Do the ur-ur-ur-ur-ur-ur-ur-urkel

For a show called "Family Matters", family doesn't seem to much matter.

A daughter got retconned off the show entirely without explanation on screen, and off screen the reason given was "not enough material to go around".

Which is odd because a cousin (Richie), and an adopted son (3J) got all sorts of material to work with.

A grandmother (Estelle) got written out of the show.

An aunt/sister (Rachel) got written out of the show.

The star of the show, who literally got the show written into existence because of being so loved from a previous show (Harriette Winslow from Perfect Strangers) had to be recast because the actress couldn't handle another actor in her own show doing what she did (Jaleel White).

A lot of screen time was given to characters that weren't family members (Urkel, Myra, Geraldo, 3J).

It was a weird show.
>>
>>220138184
It meant urkel flew on a jet pack from Chicago to San Francisco and landed at the house of Danny Tanner
>>
>>220140197
>odd
Theres a limited finite amount of material they can write and they spread it too thin as many shows do. richie was the obvious choice, the aunt rachel was necessary. estelle actress was very unhealthy. hariette was recast a few episodes before the finale, she should have just been left out.

Waldo was kino, Myra was amazing (rip), 3J was a really fucking weird choice but again very late in the series after everyone else was getting out. Finite material.
>>
>>220140197
Yeah, no one believes this show was a Perfect Strangers spinoff now. Not many people remember or care about Perfect Strangers I guess. And when you bring up Urkel hijacking the show everyone assumes it was supposed to be around Carl, not Harriette.
>>
>>220140700
some movie? or tv show brought about a perfect strangers resurgence a while back because of its amazing theme song iirc.

He's unironically perfect for Sonic

>>
>>220140628
They could have had an Estelle funeral and the fallout from that, as seen from a very inner circle family oriented point of view. See how each family member deals with loss and grief, and how each family member helps each other family member. That would be a "matter" (event) that would "matter" (of great importance).

Laura could have had a pregnancy scare. Eddie could have had gang issues. Carl could have gone undercover. Harriette could have gone back to school. There were a lot of social and political issues of the time that just seemed to get glossed over or entirely ignored that would have been interesting to see unfold through the lens of this specific family unit.

How would they handle black panthers? Gentrification? Kwanzaa? Juneteenth? OJ? Bloods vs Krips? East vs West?
>>
>>220140700
"cop" is more universal than "elevator operator", is probably why.

Situational Comedies shouldn't be Situational Black People Problem Lecture Documentaries

you kike jew faggots had All in the Family, that was enough of your trash we needed
>>
>>220142121
I never said lecture. But for a show about the day to day goings on in a black family household, stories could have been more sophisticated than Carl forgets it's Valentine's Day and tries to pass off an old card as a new card.

I didn't have a problem with black Urkel being bullied by white jocks for not being able to climb a rope, and it was fun that he got to the top with a jetpack. A thing can be funny and a teachable moment at the same time. It doesn't have to be a soapbox. And comedies can do drama. The very first exposure I ever had to the word "nigger" was this show. It was very teachable, poignant, and entirely on-brand and the show handled it perfectly.

Will Smith gets mugged and shot and Carlton buys a gun in Fresh Prince and no one bat's an eye. But suggest Urkel show go beyond the basic ha-ha's, and the fags call you a jew.

>>
>>220142365
Mike LITERALLY took over the show, though. It was always the comradery of the trio and the melodrama and insanity that held the glue and heart of the show together, but that was all through Mike Clattenburg. After he left, Smith began writing and the humour became more crass focusing on the word "cock" and how many different variety of ways it can be incorporated into an insult and the focus of the show became around Bubbles always being the smartest and reasonable and always right one while his voice became hoarser, his movements and mannerisms became more erratic and he just got more fucking annoying.
Jaleel White claimed he had to fight constantly with the writers.

no shit???? you don't say???

He was a 12 year old nobody getting paid scale during his first appearance.

He was a 21 year old world famous gigachad getting paid more than every other cast member during his last appearance.

Puberty, wealth, being able to afford good food and having an active sex and social life will do that.
>>
>>220142514
Jenna Ortega claims to have done similar on Wednesday, itself a spin-off/takeover of an Addam's Family IP. She wrote her own lines and such.

Uncle Fester was the clear standout though.
>>
>>220138184
It's meant to be read both ways, as a "joke", but family matters as in matters relating to the family was already a phrase people used.
