So what the fuck is left exactly? Is this just pure autism? >Bresson’s theory of cinema:>Do not film actors.>Do not photograph them acting.>Do not film beautiful images.>Do not explain anything.>Do not use music>Do not show what sound can already imply.>Do not show what absence can make stronger.>Strip the film down until only necessary relations remain.>Then, through this severe machine, something mysterious may appear.
>>220138728A lot of the times directors come up with "film theory" a lot of it is trolling. Bresson himself filmed actors (obviously), he was just not a fan of classical acting. And his films often feature great framing and memorable images, they're just not picturesque in either classical studio sense nor in a "every frame a painting" sense. Although you could argue that his shots were painting like, just minimalist painting. One of the most striking shots in history of cinema is a shot with blood on the wall in L'Argent.
>>220138728>>Do not film actorsHe would have loved AI
>>220138728I'm fine with this stuff as a director's personal signature, but saying this is how all cinema ought to be is just fucking retarded. Film isn't the same as theater but that doesn't mean it has to aspire to the absolute realism of documentary either.
>>220139670Bresson shat on a lot of directors but if you actually look up what he ended up praising he didn't at all think all cinema is supposed to be that way. He liked Chaplin and he is on record on praising a Roger Moore James Bond movie (I think it was For Your Eyes Only).
>>220138728Are you retarded or just pretending?
