I was just reading this book about the history of buffalo hunting in the plains and there was this chapter about this awesome battle that took place between 30 random buffalo hunters and a massive war party of primarily Comanche but alsoKiowa, Cheyenne, and other Plains Indians. The buffalo hunters were holed up in a place called “Adobe Walls” which was an old abandoned adobe settlement where buffalo hunters would gather when passing through to barter with local traders and buy and sell goods and supplies. The Comanche were a group of horse archer style warriors who lived in different tribes and had uneasy relationships with one another. The Comanche, as horse raiders, were also the mortal enemies of nearly all other tribes, especially farming tribes like the Cheyenne. Nobody had ever unified the Comanche under one warrior chief before, and no one had ever even dreamed of leading a war party of united Comanche, Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Kiowa; It was unthinkable. But a young and charismatic Comanche Medicine Man named “White Eagle” did it. He even organized the first ever Comanche Sun Dance (long story).White Eagle was now in charge of a massive war party, somewhere between 300 and 2,000 in total. Their plan was to drive the white man out of the Plains, but their first target was actually meant to be the Tonkawas, an Indian tribe who worked closely with the US cavalry. That was the first step in White Eagles plan. He never even got that far. Instead, in preparation for the upcoming war, the war party descended on the aforementioned encampment of “Adobe Walls” buffalo hunter camp for what was meant to be a quick supply raid/bloodbath. The raid was such a miserable failure that afterwards they broke up and went their separate ways. They lost well over a dozen warriors of their own while only killing four pale faces in total and a dog and some mules. White Eagle was given a severe beating and his name was changed to Wolf’s Vulva
