>A show about the year 3000 is mostly flashbacks about the 80s and 90s.
>>
>>220150707
Thats when the writers grew up. What else did they know?
>>
>>220150707
It’s just bad writing
>>
>>220150707
It started out about the year 3000, but it's become a show about a man from the 1900s experiencing the developments of the 2000s.
>>
>mostly
Huh? Do you have a list detailing wich episode is about the years Fry lived and wich are just future stuff?
>>
>>220150707
Name thirteen examples of this.
>>
>>220150707
There's a post-cancellation episode where Fry calls Leela a "Lady-Gaga-esque Fame Hag" and it always bugged me that Fry even knew who Lady Gaga was. Like even if it's explained that he learned about her in the head museum or something, him knowing the connotations around her behavior in the late 2000s/early 2010s well enough to reference her in conversation felt so wrong and forced. I hated that line.
>>
>>220150896
They made an 'Obamacare' gag that felt like that for me. Should have been 'Nixoncare'.
>>
>>220150896
wow that's really stupid
>>
>>220150896
>also does fry really seem like someone who would use "esque"?

I always found the writing in this show a bit inconsequential, the characters just act out the "plot of the week", like puppets, instead of stemming from the chatacters (like in the Simpsons). A bit Rick & Morty-esque, except the characters are quite strong in the first few seasons and the "random bullshit" of the week seems less millennial-coded.

>the characters just act out the "plot of the week", like puppets, instead of stemming from the chatacters (like in the Simpsons
You mustve stopped watching the Simpsons in the 90s or something.
>>
>>220150707
I was actually a big fan of Futurama in the Adult Swim days. I enjoyed it more than KotH, FG, RC, etc., always thought it was underrated. In a way it still kind of is.
>>
>>220151066
Yes, I only watch seasons 1-10 on repeat. But it's not a compliment to compare Futurama to late (or middle) season Simpsons, is it now?
>>
>>220151023
The characters do take on this kind of 'vaudeville'-esque style as the series develops. Not puppets exactly but the performers enjoy stretching the characters out in different ways.

But just for me I'd say the Futurama major characters stay more 'in character' than late Simpsons, and the minor characters *have* one-liners but they're fairly well rounded out.

Of course people in the year 3,000 will be nostalgic for the 2,980.
Do you think nostalgia just won't exist in the future?

One thing about Futurama - they have created a consistent 'robot' culture or style. The robot characters aren't all the same, but they all act like robots.

Lunatics Unleashed takes place in the future of 2772, and they had one episode about a teleporting (timetravelling?) space train, and they used a flashback from like 2300 or so, that was black and white footage, even though it's still our future, they had to force black and white footage to convey that it's THEIR past.

In the first Hulu season of Futurama, they see a 1970's themed broadcast of some kind from an old 1970's style radio, but it's from the 2070's or 2970's or whatever.

Someone living today, has strong feelings about the differences between the 1950's, 1970's, 1980's and 1990's. (the 1960's are barely distinguishable from the 1950's as far as I can tell. I'm sure if you lived though them you have a deeper opinion, but not one that pop culture forces down your throat. If Mad Men took place a decade earlier what would need to change?)

Someone living in the year 1100 probably wouldn't have strong opinions on the 1050's, 1070's, 1080's, or 1090's.

Consider also, that a movie, show or video game made in 2015 has no distinguishing characteristics that separate it from something made in 2025. 2005-2015 is far more significant.

I'm sure AI will shake things up, but once it's done shaking things up, I don't think it's unreasonable to say that we are at the end of history, and everything will be "normal" for several samey centuries.

In Better Call Saul it really bugged the shit out of me when Mike had that one conversation with Nacho where he said
>Murphy's Law says one of these things is gonna go wrong
I'm pretty sure a guy like Nacho doesn't know reddit philosophical terms like Murphy's Law.

I can tell your going to fume in a rage, but I have never been a big music buff. I have never been ontop of contemporary music at any point in my life, and I obviously know less about older music. The only bands I really know are the Beatles and AC/DC. But yeah, I'm gonna guess those guys are from the 1960's and it would be awkward to imagine a Beatles or AC/DC cameo in Leave it to Beaver or something.
>>
>>220153897

Leave It To Beaver's run was half in the 60s anyway, albeit the boring part of the 60s instead of the cool part.

Fry being a 20something Gen-X guy lead to some weird situations yeah.
Like him doing "the hustle" or being a fan of "rush" were bad misjudgments by the boomer-writers.
>>
>>220153897
totally different zeitgeist, the 60s was all about rebellion and expanding your mind while the 50s was about being a suburban conformo who was happy you had a suburban house and a new Oldsmobile after 20 years of depression and war.
>>
>>220153710
it's not a philosophical term, it's just a saying. there are kids' books about it.
>>
>>220153710
Murphy's Law predates Reddit by decades, anon. It was popularized by WW2 vets. The only reason reddit even knows the term is because they probably heard it from their parents/grandparents.
>>
>>220153710
>I'm pretty sure a guy like Nacho doesn't know reddit philosophical terms like Murphy's Law.
Other people are arguing with the reddit term you used, but I agree with the core idea here. Nacho, though smart, wouldn't know the term Murphy's Law. He's a street level gangster. He'd say some shit about things going sideways for sure, but I doubt he'd know the term.
>>
>>220155192
Rush will always be great
>>
>>220156855
Virtually everything discussed or associated with Reddit predates Reddit.

In the current year, no one is using that term except redditors and eccentric british youtubers who are the epitome of reddit.

yes, it's a comedy show. The futuristic setting is mostly a farce to talk about stuff from the 20th century, but make it zany and weird. Sorry to have spoiled this for you.

Fry grew up on those times it makes sense that's all the culture he knows and he constantly references.

There are a bunch of youtubers who not only dress but adopt the mannerisms of old times, specially from the 1920s or 40s. I'm not surprised by Fry doing this desu.

I know right? Why didn't they make it more faithful to the actual year 3000?

Beatniks, Amphetamines, Mescaline.
People discount the 50s underground and the drugs that would bring about the 50s.
But there was plenty of 60s in the 50s. Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley.
They didn't have the lead guitar magic of later music or the production value that came about over the decades, but don't pretend that the 50s were some innocence-exclusive time when Playboy was born in that time and rose to national prominence. They even had an issue where the Playmate of the Month was only 17, but had parental permission, Playboy published CP. Hell look at Hawaiian shirts, that's a precursor to tie-dye in a way.
Yeah, culture is a constant dialogue, but everything from alcohol and drugs to music and movies. But there was plenty of what people consider the 50s in the 60s. Watch some early Alien B-Movies if you're questioning me.
