Walking Dead syndrome. It was a huge death flag when a character that had fallen to the wayside was finally getting a lot of attention and their own episode where they went through abrupt development, overcame some personal problem, or demonstrated their worth. It always screamed "please care when they die very soon". The reliance on cheap freelance writers nowadays means when it's finally time to write an episode like that, it's so sudden and in your face without any easing into it from the previous episodes written by completely different people that didn't know or give a shit that it's hard not for everyone to notice.
