If anyone actually reads the petition it was completely reasonable to sign it and the people who have recanted their support for it are fucking spineless opportunists. It wasn't about asserting "support" for Polanski or absolving him of his crime. It was about protecting artists from being arrested and extradited at international festivals. Considering how many artists around the world are subject to state harassment and repression, allowing jackboot thugs to kidnap them from an international event is obviously a horrific precedent to set.

If an Israeli filmmaker was issued a warrant for their arrest for making an anti-Zionist film and the German police, being the good Germans they are, arrested said filmmaker at the Berlin international film festival, would you support such a blatant act of tyranny and artistic suppression? The Polanski arrest incident set a precedent for exactly such an event happening and that's why people of conscience and foresight opposed it.
