Back in the 40s and 50s you still had a lot of unmixed WASP x Germanic types and the full effect of the "big Catholic White family" hadn't happened yet. The Catholics mixed with the lower and middle class WASPs & Germans while the rich WASPs married Jews. It changed the country's average facial features. The absorption of millions of Slavs into the broader gene pool in the Midwest also changed things. Maybe 20 years ago I visited the Max Factor museum in Hollywood (now called the Hollywood Museum). They had a fantastic collection of original glamor 8x10s (some larger formats too) and the b&w photos just blew away the color ones.
