In the original drama Mariko had a permanent gentle smile at all times so realizing that she had tremendous depth to her hiding behind the mask was much more believable. In the new one Mariko looks like she's always pissed off and yet occasionally has moments where she looks happy. She's way too emotional and easy to read and so all those comments about her being emotionless just seem hollow.
