Everyone jerks off to Jackson's Lord of the Rings like it's the greatest thing ever made. Epic battles, noble heroes, "good defeats evil." But strip away the music and look closer.
You're watching a bunch of primitive racists and immortal elves wage a war of extermination against the only nation in Middle-earth trying to bring progress: Mordor.
Mordor wasn't cartoon villainy. It was a rising civilization of scholars, engineers, physicians and alchemists on the verge of an industrial revolution, the sole spark of reason in a backwards world of feudal kingdoms, tree-worshippers and sword-swinging retards stuck in eternal medieval stasis.
Gandalf and elves were terrified of it. Machines and knowledge would "destroy the harmony of the world" and "dry up men's souls." So they invented the Ring quest as propaganda, rallied the "Free Peoples," and crushed the threat.
After the war they installed puppet-king Aragorn, massacred the survivors, burned the libraries, and rewrote history: orcs became mindless monsters, Sauron became Satan, and Mordor became hell on earth.
Tolkien was a Catholic Luddite who seethed at modernity and projected it all into fantasy. Industry = evil smokestacks = orcs. Magic bloodlines and nature = pure good. The movies just made the propaganda prettier.
Every time you cheer the Rohirrim charge or the beacons lighting up, you're rooting for anti-progress, magical feudalism, and the deliberate strangling of Middle-earth's only chance at an Enlightenment.
Frodo wasn't a hero. He was the ultimate useful idiot.

tl;dr: The future lost. The Luddites won. And /tv/ still claps for it.
