Aztecs and Mayans were pretty much stone age. Way behind even ancient civilizations. They didn't have metal or the wheel.
After reading a book about the exploits of Hernan Cortes I can safely say the Aztecs were not the most fucked up of the two. Somehow we seem to glide off the fact we did very similar shit to the aztecs and mayans in terms of gruesome societal norms. I'm not saying the mesoamericans were "better" than the europeans but I am saying that using their human sacrifice as a argument for their barbarity is hypocritical.

There needs to be a proper movie about Cortes because his story is so crazy it reads like fiction. I like the part when he arrives on his checkpoint stop inbetween Hispaniola and central America and some Spanish priest rushes towards the crew on a boat and explains that he's been living amongst the Mesoamericans for years and was going to be sacrificed alongside his friend but they escaped. He was there for so long his Spanish had become rusty and become Hernan local translator. The other priest had apparently gone native, had his mouth and nose pierced with jade and decided to marry a local woman.
