You can't. Writers HAVE to give cynical characters such as him severe traumas to make them sympathetic to the audience. Rust HAD to have a backstory of losing his child, otherwise he'd be mocked as a pretentious fedora alcoholic. Cutter HAD to have a missing leg and an eye. Etc etc.
