It's so contrived and ridiculous in certain ways but a lot of fun in others. I thought Redmayne would be miscast but he pulls off the upper case suave type really well. He's also not le morally gray - he's a complete piece of shit. Him caring about his wife and kid isn't enough to humanize him which works great. Not every character needs to be conflicted. The black chick is not a very good actress and her family scenes are completely superfluous but she isn't really a girl boss trope either. She fucks up a ton, gets admonished a ton and ultimately dies due to her own hubris and stupidity. I liked it a lot.

Yeah the guy is obviously a hitman who kills people for money, which is evil, and he's not above killing innocent people to save his own skin i.e. out of self preservation, which is evil, but he's not COMPLETELY evil. He repeatedly shows the capacity for remorse, is visibly increasingly conflicted with his own actions and who he has become, and even displays a mild amount of extreme self-delusion bordering on psychosis when his wife confronts him about the extent to which he has been lying to himself and compartmentalising his dual identities. A 'complete piece of shit' would be someone devoid of remorse, who makes no attempt to spare innocent life, has no qualms about what he does, and goes out of his way to kill innocent people when he doesn't need to. All of these characteristics don't apply to the jackal. yeah he's a bad guy, but by the standards of a tv show, he's almost certainly morally grey/conflicted and not a "complete" piece of shitI'd also add Bianca is actually a worse person on a spiritual level than he is, or similarly evil.

In shows that are generally realistic and follow the same ethical/moral structure of our world, I apply the same criteria. "It's just a tv show bro" is fine if it's a universe where the nature of people and their existence is drastically different than ours but not in a show like this. If someone did what he did in our world, he'd unequivocally be a complete piece of shit by anyones metric.
