Nothing funnier than all the Irish entries being authors born under British Ireland lel, especially Wilde who was baptised Anglican by his Anglo-Irish parents (typical Anglos trying to push homosexuality onto Ireland). Hell, Swift was literally an Anglican cleric (and also of Anglo descent).

>>220209857France, because it's all about Characters whereas other countries mainly deal in elaborate stories that manage to side-step character growth in favour of basic archetypes. America is so moralistic than every American story is like Pilgrim's Progress. I think it'sFrance>Germany>Italy>Ireland>Russia>Britain>USA
>>220216709Shakespeare hardly wrote novels now did he?
>>220210580Russian lit is fairly elaborate but it depends where you start... Dostoyevsky is not always going to connect with a Western reader, but anyone of intense religiosity will understand something like Crime And Punishment as a dark Russian national parable.
As an Englishman I'm ashamed to admit that I can't stand a lot of our older fiction. Take Middlemarch, I got maybe a hundred pages in before I realised I was gaining little insight or enjoyment from it and was continuing out of a sense of sheer obligation. I'll will concede that the quality of writing itself was however beautiful in many places. Wilde is tedious, Joyce feels like a cryptic crossword unhappily mated with a thesaurus. Turn of the century American fiction is of higher quality than we like to admit, shame it all turned into hysterical realism/racial mopery at the turn of the more recent century. German literature I have little experience with, and I can't believe that Italy or Spain didn't make their way on here. No Eco? No Italo?
>>220221613Respectfully, Calvino and Eco aren't enough to carry an entire nations literary tradition. added to this is the fact that 19th cent.-till postwar Italian lit is not nearly as oft read as say the French, I think their exclusion here is justified.
>>220220131israel*
UK and the reason is simple. Only wannabe intelligentsia redditors and people looking to brag about how cultured and clever they are actually read the Russian, French or German classics whereas everyone is well versed in the English literature. This is a cold and hard truthnuke that must be accepted.
>>220215202Joyce likely was and Stoker certainly was on his mother's side, that sort of Gothic fantasy is generally Catholic (for obvious reasons) and it's a clear influence on Wilde.Irish literature has always been but might include:George Bernard ShawC.S. LewisBrian Moore It's poetic, gestural and character-focused, sharing French concerns. The international authors that can't be claimed but might be mentioned in the same breath:Arthur Conan DoyleHenry James William FaulknerF. Scott FitzgeraldJohn SteinbeckCormac McCarthy

>>220221613English romantic literature is extremely rich and influential. The 'Byronic Hero' alone fertilized an entire generation of Russian literature. Gothic fiction, which was started by Horace Walpole, an Englishman, would go on to inspire the entire continent. England frankly doesn't get as much credit as it should. Instead being seen as a country of shopkeepers than one of brilliant writers and poets.

>>220223376Yes but that's also happening across the rest of Europe and Russia.>Would this influence contemporary writers in their works?I can't speak for fiction but Mark Fisher was much lauded and wrote a great deal about the alienation of modern life and the inability for anyone to think of a future reality that wasn't a pastiche of the past. That leftist tradition of alienation always tries to avoid mentioning the obvious that a diverse shit hole full of people who religiously despise your very existence matters more than not owning the means of production.
>>220223463Is this the end of literature? After this it’s either written by people with brown skin or ai. Or both. Can this be seen as a good thing?
>>220223507It's not the end of literature. There are still worthwhile writers in the West. It will probably be the end of writers as a kind of international rockstar, though. I see writing reverting back to a communal activity. You write a piece and share it with your friends for example. You do that in order to describe your collective experiences. Your friends will want to read it because you wrote it and because you understand them and vice versa. Using AI would cheapen that for both you and them.
>>220223622Ai lets stupid people write
>>220223653Stupid people write stupid things with or without AI.
>>220223703Let’s say you wrote something beautiful. Someone sees it and tells an ai bot to copy your writing style in order to publish a series of novels to sell online. How would that make you feel?
>>220223733Obviously cheated but we're still in this frame of mind where we see writing as something done for international acclaim and monetary rewards. It wasn't always like that. I'm saying it's better if we move to a more local conception of writing where it's done as something personal not just in terms of what it's expressing but in who is reading it too.Even now we're already getting there, right? I can tell from your posts you wouldn't care about a brown author even if all of India was telling you he was the greatest thing since butter chicken. You have an implicit communal orientation to what makes a good writer which requires that that person has some shared experience with you. As the world develops and subcultures proliferate and AI destroys digital bonds, that window of community will become smaller, yes, but also more intimate.
>>220223944You are repeating yourself but I see the point you are trying to say.
>>220223944What you describe reminds me of lotus eating. We are all trapped our little bubbles. Is this how things are heading towards?
>>220224101Yes but you can also think of it as a reversion. You know, it's very weird in a certain sense that you can easily read the greatest works of Chinese civilization. Historically you would have existed within a bubble and only had access to things within that bubble. Maybe some new things are introduced on occasion but it's quite rare. I feel this is already happening. I don't know if you've had this experience but even when I've taken up hobbies, it seems my soul always identifies the one other person in the crowd that wasted their youth on 4chan. Needless to say, they're also disaffected and white. These bubbles seem to form in the midst of great chaos.I think this is actually quite preferable. You can easily connect the decline of our civilization with the over-ambitious goal to develop a universal morality and universal subjectivity. The nations that are relatively preserved from destruction have always been quite fine with a particular national subject that need not cohere with the rest of the planet. That's why you get people from Asia who gladly say "In our country, we think that..." which seems quite absurd to most modern Westerners.
>>220224229I preferred the old ways that there existed exceptional authors who grabbed the planets attention and became the envy of others. An excellence you can point to and say look that is what it means to be good. Something you can identity from across all bubbles. What you have described me so far that exceptional author would be trapped in this tiny bubble while mediocre and stupid made with ai becomes what is popular. As for nations preserved from destruction that’s an entirely different topic but maybe the destruction of a nation beings when everyone starts creating their own bubbles fragmenting the country into pieces
>>220209857where's china and japan?
>>220224683No one takes squid game people seriously
>>220224351The "planet" you describe wasn't really the planet, though. It was Europe and its descendant nations like the US. Good writing in England isn't the same as good writing in Japan or China which traditionally have a four-act structure that decenters conflict rather than the West's three-act structure. Not to mention, also, most writers and readers were upper class.>Something you can identity from across all bubblesDo you really care if someone in Laos doesn't consider Milton one of the greats? I struggle to imagine why. Surely what you really want is to be able to have broad agreement with those people around you. In other words, with those people that occupy your same bubble. >that exceptional author would be trapped in this tiny bubbleIs that so bad? And to be fair, it already happens. Russians often complain that English speakers only know Dostoevsky and Tolstoy and not the hundred other brilliant Russian authors. >maybe the destruction of a nation beings when everyone starts creating their own bubblesPossibly but this also happens for a good reason. Your bubble is changed a great deal by the inclusion of someone radically different.
>>220224818I guess I want the exceptional to be more out there in the public’s consciousness. Hopefully to inspire better writing and to bully shitty writing back to the depths from once it came. Your bubble theory negates that. And promotes this mentality that I am happy here in my little circle when the world is entirely different nowadays. The game has changed. Ai is here and it’s only going to become stronger. People with brown and black spin will only reproduce like rats and become this huge army you cannot possibly ignore. I don’t think the bubble way is the right way. I see your frustration how obscure authors have become trapped in bubbles already probably for decades even. And that’s because of the language barrier. And maybe other factors. Remember I repeat times have changed and people expect different things from authors

>>220209857Terrible book lists aside, to answer your actual question, you can't do it the same way with countries because too much is made in Hollywood. You could maybe make it a binary choice between American films and the rest of the world, but even then I think the balance tips too hard in America's favour. My proposed splits for such a question would be different categories. You could do decades, but 90s mogs. You could do genre, but that would make it far too subjective, people would just pick their favourite genre and at the point the question becomes moot. My suggestion would be studios. That way you could have the big ones (Universal, Paramount, MGM etc) then have Indie (any other american studios) and Foreign (including British productions and Asian stuff including anime)
