Nolan famously gives little direction to his actors and often just does one take and uses that one in the film. an actor like rdj would probably hate that because he likes to just ramble on and on with his improvised dialogue and do lots of different takes with alternate lines. working for a director like nolan probably feels like he’s being handcuffed.
on the other hand he won an oscar for that role and other directors who are known to just do one take most of the time, like clint eastwood and I believe woody allen too, have also directed many oscar-winning performances.
