First movie was absolute kino. Low budget for scifi, but well used, great cast (no stars, but good picks), great use of an original setting with just a few hints of what the galaxy is like.

Then Diesel became a star and everything went down hill. non-sensical world building, story all over the place. Chronicles of Riddick has some redeeming features, the prison planet stuff is good, the setting is still original (though stupid), good cast, but they blew the budget on effects instead of writing.

3rd movie is back to a smaller budget, but it is too much a just Riddick show. they take too long to get the other people in, but then it turns into a good movie. though it maybe follows the formula of the first one a bit too closely. but can't have it both ways.

Liked pitch black for what it was and Chronicles was dumb as shit but still fun. Haven't seen the third one.
