It's funny because the more you read about Stalingrad the more you realise how this film is both massively misinformed and how the real situation was actually a lot worse for the average Soviet soldier.They did not "run out" of rifles. They did not charge the enemy in horrendous wave attacks. They were decently equipped. The truth was Stalingrad was a meat grinder for both sides and usually resulted in entire regiments shrinking to a small handful of deaf, bloodied men. Soldiers were free to speak out as much as they wanted against the commissars, on the front lines that is, because grumbling under fire isn't something you can contain. Morale was so bad that some Soviet soldiers drunk the fluid in their gas mask kits because they believed there was alcohol in it. The Soviets were not "on their last legs" as this film suggests. They were instead the first waves of a prepared counter attack against the German advance. They were the first waves of a well equipped force that was being supplied by new waves of armor from a rejuvenated war economy that Hitler had stupidly allowed to take place by putting the pressure off Moscow and slowing the advance. The reason Stalingrad was shitty was because it was meant to be an all-for-nothing battle and because both Soviet and German high command did not tolerate any failures. Don't get me started on how the Romanians felt.
