I like Jackie Brown but this is an example of Tarantino when he falls too in love with his screenwriting. He overextended. Leading from his pop culture moment of Royale With Cheese to an overwrought commentary presented mainly by Sam Jackson to DeNiro at his worst. Bob is almost medicated in this film, and I’m not sure if he was disappointed he didn’t get to be Max Cherry but the alternative of Sylvester Stallone would’ve been better here. This scene also is supposed to show the bond between the two criminal (who were actual characters in previous Elmore Leonard novels before Rum Punch—the source novel of Jackie Brown) but there doesn’t seem to be any real connection here. Sam Jackson does all the talking, and it’s real just a monologue about nothing in particular.
