Why is it literally just remakes, sequels, prequels and spin offs? Why aren’t they producing new stories, new characters, new worlds?

Mainstream audiences only go to see remakes, sequels, prequels and spin offs.
Only niche audiences bother to go see anything original, which isn't profitable for big budget films.
