did the game of thrones ending kill the books?
feast for crows & dance of dragons books were basically all filler. it was clear he didnt have a single clue where to take it in the end. i dont blame him for cashing in with the the show, the visual medium suites his story/world better anyway.
>>220249589Feast for crows was one of the most boring books I've ever read. I had to start it several times before I was able to just power through it. Dance with dragons was only slightly better because I liked the characters more. No idea why he decided to mix it up like that when the first three were chronological. Did you know it's almost twice as long since dance with dragons came out than was between game of thrones and dance with dragons? He wrote 5 books in that amount of time and was already kind of dragging his feet on 4 and 5.
>>220249589It was supposed to be 3 books. He decided it would be 7, then at one point 11. He got caught up in his own autism with the War of 5 Kings. Big mistake for a writer. Gassed himself out big time. Struggled to put words down after that. Then he took a long break. Recipe for total apathy and creative burnout. He's written other things since then so he's obviously never going to finish it. He basically made every bad mistake you can when you're in the creative process.
>>220249070He's so old and fat, how is he still alive?
>>220249693ha, nah i didnt keep time, and i only read DoD since id already waited so long. so yeah, to answer OP specifically: no the tv show did nothing for the books because they were already dead in the water
>>220249972The tv show was the final nail in the coffin for the books actually. Martin took longer and longer with each book after he got done with the third. The first 3 were all within 2 years of each other. That's when he planned to end it. Then it was 5 for Feast and 7 for Dance. More each time. He subconsciously dedicated himself to 3 books then got caught up and exhausted himself. Then whether he'll ever admit it or not the TV show reaffirmed that notion because now no matter what, hey, it did get AN ending.
>>220249070HBO, Elden Ring, Wild Cards, etc. is what killed the books. He's clearly struggling with the story and as a result he's become avoidant and started to dread working on it more and more, hence all the side projects. The last two books are guaranteed never coming out.
>>220249729This proves you don't have to do everything perfect to become beloved and famous
>>220250094He became a avoidant and tired of it in 1999. He wishes he'd ended it with his original plan. He's written like a dozen other things since then. He committed himself to 3 and that's all he ever put in the tank for this project. Some writers will do the same thing forever but Martin was never that guy. He bounces around constantly. He probably views that decision as one of if not the biggest mistake he ever made. The more time that goes by the less he wants to do it. He probably kicks himself every day thinking he could've been free and clear of this bullshit before fucking 9/11 if he hadn't changed his mind at a pivotal moment.
Not at allthe books were dead all the way back in like 2002 when GRRM couldn't figure out how to continue the story with the "5 year gap" and then decided to just write random nonsense and wait to die. He was doing the same cycle of making promises on AA Dance With Dragons and not delivering and that was before the show even came out. >>220250022>The tv show was the final nail in the coffin for the books actuallyThe series was doomed even before the TV show>>220250094lol he was avoiding working on the books way before that.
>>220250132You need to be born rich to be famous.
Nah, I don't really think he gave them much in terms of how winds of winter will be.. maybe some small ideas here and there that he had already scrapped.Do I think the book is finished? probably not. close enough for him to feel like he can procrastinate though. AKOTSK is mainly taking his attention away from releasing said book. I also don't think TWOW is the last book. It's ready and he doesn't want to drop it because of all the HBO content he's profiting off of from it. Might even drop some new novellas before he does drop it.
>>220250275He claimed Winds was almost done literally 15 years ago. He hasn't written anything in easily 10 years. Not a word.
>>220250275> I don't really think he gave them much in terms of how winds of winter will be.He gave them the bullet points, so the ending they made is his ending, even if the dialogue is shit since D&D can barely write if they aren't directly adapting a work.
>>220250405All the theories from the show were figured out years before people even picked up on really small shit like Sandor being the gravedigger so yes of course it's the ending. That's also Martin's fault for letting it sit for so fucking long. Of course they figured it all out before he could blow his load. He gave them 20 fucking years to piece it together. If he'd dropped them on schedule he'd have beaten out the widespread propagation of those little details. He even got mad at that. Like someone stole his fucking thunder.
George wanted to get big in television and film. He wrote stories with the goal of getting them adapted into screenplays. He got that with Game of Thrones, and is now annoyed that most fans hated the show's ending and there's an expectation that he'll finish the story he started when that's pointless after it's already been adapted by a big studio.
>>220250405>so the ending they made is his endingBut they are completely inept. The surest sign of bad writing is how the writer navigates from point A to point B. Just because he gave them bullet points doesn't mean he helped them connect the dots. His ending, if it even exists, would easily have made more sense than the rushed garbage D&D shat out.
>>220250497>so yes of course it's the endingLady Stoneheart wasn't in the show, so how is Sandor being the gravedigger relevant?
>>220249070Him being a fat lazy fuck with unlimited trampoline money from selling the rights to HBO killed the books. The show ending just killed most people's ability to care either way.
his world always had shit designhis best chapters are when POVs roam the countryside - jon, arya, jaime, even brienne.

>>220249589I thought Dance of Dragons was pretty good outside of the Dany shit. The Winterfell/North/Stannis stuff is great anyway, and i loved the epilogue.
