He can beat up things, yeah ok, but it's way more interesting when he's just part of moral conundrums or even extraplanar things.But the whole issue is that everything is colored by whatever the current world sphere looks like, to the point of not even being subtle. So now superman has to be VERY concerned about some sort of shitty country instead of anything interesting.
