So why are we letting Zach Cregger and his fanbase gaslight us? His version of Resident Evil is doing NOTHING new in terms of adapting the games into a film. It's also less like the games than these films. These films try really hard to turn the core story ideas of RE (the individual, the corporate, the zombie as an allegory for being a corporate slave) into something cinematic. Cregger's movie has no thematic connections to the games. None at all.I feel like I'm taking crazy pills hearing Cregger and his fanbase talk. They're acting like he is the first director to think of the idea of adapting a videogame by focusing on the gameplay experience, not the original story and characters. Except that's what every RE film did. It's why RE Retribution has metaphorical save points. (Alice dying and waking up as another version of herself.) It's why she battles through a series of levels with bosses at the end of each section. It's why she use a bike chain, then a pistol, then the pistol runs out of ammo and she uses a Vector SMG. It's why Alice goes from a knife to a pistol to a sawn-off shotgun and then double pistols in RE: The Final Chapter. It's why Alice rummages through drawers and has to make her own ammo for the shotgun that shoots coins. Cregger keeps opening his mouth and saying nothing of substance. His comments about this movie are bizarre. His explanations and backtracking about how it's totally canon to the games but not actually are embarrassing. He has basically just made the 2002 film again without any of the things that made that film interesting. Original protagonist, takes place vaguely adjacent to the events of RE2, but in a different location in a new continuity. And he thinks this is revolutionary.

I read the Hatten/Cregger RE script, and it really does have nothing interesting to say. That said, if it makes the final cut, the "Your body, your choice," where Bryan affirms that if his girlfriend wants to get an abortion that's her right, scene is going to be the new "Zootopia porn".If you look at each of the older RE films, they were all about something and that something was related to the ideas from the games in some way. Anderson once said that when he played RE he was inspired by Japan's lost decade, the 90s, during which numerous Japanese companies were exposed for corruption and collusion. So his vision of what was wrong with Umbrella was rooted in this. Maybe it'll be changed in the final movie, but the Cregger RE film just flat-out has none of this. There is no coherent critique of anything in the film. It feels more like Army of the Dead, which makes sense because it was written by the same guy no matter how much they put "from the mind of Zach Cregger" on the box.

Reddit is full of people absolutely confused by the trailer because everything up until now had them convinced it was "set in the universe of the games, something,something, Fallout TV show" and they're just now trying to come to terms with the fact it's an elevated horror version of AvP Requiem.
They try to do their own version of "GTA, MOTHERFUCKER! TEN POINTS!" but it comes off immensely more lame.

Resident Evil films used to look genuinely good visually. Each film looked very distinct, each film looked unique. Had a unique palette, unique colour grading, unique visual style.I hate that I'm saying this but the new reboot looks worse visually than Welcome to Raccoon City. At least Welcome to Raccoon City had a bit of visual flair. The new Resident Evil looks unbelievably generic. Modern horror is awash with bland, underlit, generic looking horror movies like this. I skim through the other RE films and there's so many cool shots. None of the shots in the new film are actually good. None of them make me say, "Damn, that'd make a cool wallpaper."
Three different directors. Cregger's one tragically sticks out like an ugly, generic, Blumhouse assembly line sore thumb.

The very first RE film takes the RE storyline and moves it forward a few years. In the games Raccoon fell in 1998. In the films, in the early 2000s. What the films instead focused on was the story themes of RE and the mechanical ideas of RE, translating these into film. This is why the RE films feel like RE. Why they are spiritually RE. Although obviously they warp RE into RoboCop-lite. Anyway, the core principle the RE films are built is that they create a new protag so they can tell Capcom to fuck off if they have to. Then they have game characters as support. As Jovovich once noted, they had to create Alice so they wouldn't be "stuck using Capcom's storylines" for characters like Jill. See, Capcom demand that all of the RE characters have the same backstories in adaptations that they do in the games. So Leon has to be a cop. Jill can't be an Umbrella employee. Chris can't be gay. This was obviously a huge issue for adaptations, so they created a setup focused around Alice with supporting roles for capcom-owned characters. This is also why the new reboot has a studio-owned lead instead of someone from the games.
