>Season 2 episode 9 “The Deal”
>conclusion is that Elaine says they can’t be friends anymore unless they start dating again
>they do
>treated like it never happened in subsequent episodes and never brought up again
Was there ever any meta explanation for this? It always puzzled me.

That episode was the last one produced for that season, and the show wasn't very popular yet, so they didn't even know if they would be back. Then they got renewed for another season and probably just said "fuck it".
>>
It was them skittering on the idea of Seinfeld being more like Friends

Genuine answer: from what I remember from the DVDs, the studio executives were insistent that Jerry and Elaine become a couple because they thought that's what the audience would want. Then that summer after that episode, they heard from real people that everyone hated it. They liked Seinfeld because it wasn't that kind of show, because it was different, there wasn't the stupid couple dynamic. So the executives and Larry David dropped it immediately and never looked back.

Also in the DVDs: Jerry lights cigars with the actual tears of idiots who think it's not a genius television show. It's pretty based.
>>
>>220259312
Nah there's like a single line of dialogue where they explain it away like three episodes later. I think Jerry is talking to his mom on the phone and he says that he and Elaine decided to be friends after all.
>>
>>220259640
>hasn´t played Trivial Pursuit with a bubble boy
>>
>>220259312
They mention it in the episode where Jerry and Elaine sleep over at Jerry's parents in Florida.

It's not, Mr pseudo intellectual.
It's a highly overrated show for people who THINK they're smart and for low IQ contrarians.

>>
>>220261042
But I never claimed I was intellectually superior because I watched some crappy tv show, lil Seinfeldtroon
>>
>>220259667
Also the producers really wanted them to bring Jerry and Elaine together because they thought that's what the audience wanted, so Larry wrote it as last episode of the season despite being strongly against it.

Then they screened the episodes out of order anyway and after they were renewed the producers didn't care anymore and Larry and Jerry pretended that it never happened.
>>
>>220261144
>Then they screened the episodes out of order anyway and after they were renewed the producers didn't care anymore and Larry and Jerry pretended that it never happened.

from season 3 on every episode has a minor reference to the previous because of this
>>
>>220261094
Has anyone ever done that? Outside of an obvious joke?
>>
>>220259312
They tried the relationship angle and then realised it didn't work or make sense for Seinfeld as a show and just pretended like it never happened. It was the correct decision. Also Elaine a cute.

The meta explanation happens in season 4 when George and Jerry “pitch” the Jerry sitcom to the studio
The head of the studio wants Jerry’s character to date Elaine character

They actually do often hint at them still having feelings for each other. In the last episode when they thought they were going to die, Elaine was about to confess that she loves him, probably.
>>
>>220259312
Its about how friends with benefits doesn't work you dummy. They dated, had sex and had broken up before. They wanted to see if they could bang and keep the casual friendship which doesn't work because you naturally pair bond.

>and never brought up again

They bring it up in The Pen S3 E3. They both go down to Florida and Jerry tells his parents that they aren't dating any more. I think the implication is that they were dating again during the end of season 2 and the start of season 3.
>>
>>220259667
>>220265747

So I guess as it was written they're only really dating in S3 E1 and S3 E2. But because its aired out of order its implied they're dating in S2 E10-12.

There's nothing in those episodes that makes it seem like they couldn't be dating. Neither Jerry or Elaine have any other romantic interests in any of those episodes.
>>
>>220264544
It's funny because most of the episodes people reference like Summer of George, The Comeback, Yada Yada, Little Kicks... etc all come from the last two seasons.

They're admittedly less grounded, but still a ton of laughs. Kruger is a perfect Steinbrenner replacement and it's not far off some of the ideas of the shows peak. If anything, Season 1 and 2 are too grounded in reality with Jerry and Larry trying too hard to make a sitcom strictly for Woody Allen.

I think season 8 is really good; but 9 is the point where it starts to feel like they're reaching and the characters start turning into flanderized parodies of themselves, Pic related. 9 still isn't terrible, its funny even if if it is reaching a little; but I do think they picked the right time to go out on top.
>>
>>220265873

Those are all season 8. Season 8 is great even without Larry. Season 9 is still solid; but 8 was still peak while 9 was starting to run out of steam.

>>
whats the deal with seinfeld lore
>>
>>220267492
Nothing. It's a sitcom. It can literally change every episode depending on the plot. Who gives a shit it's a show for laughs.
>>
>>220263736
I miss annual 25 episode per season shows. Prestige TV ruined TV. Not sure if Sopranos or BrBa is responsible.
>>
>>220266591

He managed to execute the same idea much better for the Curb Your Enthusiasm finale with a few tweaks that make it better. Its much less of a clip show than the Seinfeld finale was and in the end Larry gets off on a technicality and the public is outraged.

I think in theory the finale is a good idea. Its a callback to everything they did through the series and it acts as sort of a thesis on the show itself namely as an indictment of how narcissistic the main characters are. The big problem with it was that it just wasn't that funny. The concept was good; but it needed more jokes.
>>
>>220259312
They probably started an open thing where they'd casually bang whenever they happened to not be dating other people.

The one where George has a shot with Marissa Tomei, because I know for a fact this is humanly possible, no matter whether you are short and fat, that if you have an opportunity, you can get a celebrity or someone hot into bed, it just takes a willingness to expend the effort. Note the amount of effort required is tremendous, but it IS possible. No one should ever think "I could never get a celebrity into bed" as a Platonic truth, it's just a matter of if you're willing to put in the work.

I like the Kramer "wife" jokes from the Courtney Cox one.
>My wife...has an inner ear infection.

My favorite episode is probably the one where Kramer tells Jerry that marriage is a manmade prison. You get up in the morning, she's there. You go to bed at night, she's there. No watching TV while you eat. You talk about your day.

Losers who don't get that Seinfeld was nuking everything sane and decent and laughing while doing it are just missing the funniest shit ever.

In the episode "The Smelly Car", was the doggy bag at the start of the episode a deliberate red herring? I was waiting the entire episode for it to be revealed that Jerry accidently left the food in the car somewhere and it was really the source of the smell

No one on planet Earth used to care about continuity and caught random new episodes plus a mix of syndicated episodes. Almost everyone that e.g. watched Star Trek in the '90s saw about 60% of the episodes in random order, and probably never saw entire seasons because their local affiliates didn't buy those syndication packages. Watching these shows in order on some streaming service is a completely different experience.

The Yada Yada, primarily for the Jerry/Whatley subplot. Amazing that it wasn't written by Larry David.

Phoebe said she'd never been in a serious relationship when they exchanged keys with Mike, but previously she moved in together with that obnoxious jew guy Gary or whatever.
