The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced new eligibility rules. Acting roles must be performed by humans with their consent to be considered for an award. Likewise, writing has similarly definitive language around AI screenplays, they “must be human-authored to be eligible.”The Academy hasn’t established rules about generative AI being used in other categories like visual effects, costume design, or music but in the 1980s computer use in those categories was prohibited after the release of 'Tron'. That decision was later reversed and it is likely the Oscars will not make the same mistake again as use of AI for those tasks are likely to become standard. Writing and acting however are roles the Academy is making into deal breakers. Those are for humans only. https://press.oscars.org/news/awards-rules-and-campaign-promotional-regulations-approved-99th-oscarsr
Who won the oscars this year lol
Movie awards are a crazy concept>nominees are almost universally the wealthy elite>award presenters are universally the wealthy elite>everyone is wearing expensive designer clothing>the awards are for playing dress-up or facilitating the playing of dress-up>there are mid-show dance & music numbers to entertain the wealthy elite>the wealthy elite walk on stage and thank their family members for supporting them in their dress-up endeavours>after the show, the wealthy elite go to after-parties where they celebrate their victories
>>220270542They're right, only human made slop should be considered for their "first pic of a child at the after party" awards.
>>220270542How would they know?
>>220270744Even crazier is the general public being enthralled by the whole thing.
>>220270799They wouldn't. They don't even watch the movies.
>>220270799I'll be a very long time before AI acting won't be detectable but for writing, yeah, there's going to be a lot of cheating going on.
>>220270819It’s almost the equivalent of being into the royal family. Celebrities are a debased American version of European royals
>>220270799They won't.I've been using chat gpt to help me write a story. I had an overarching plot and it helped me create subplots with tension that are frankly better than anything I was going to come up with. I also used it to fact check what i was writing. It hasn't exactly written the words for me. But I couldn't have done it without it
It wouldn't surprise me if they eventually get rid of the Oscar for writing. Pretty much everyone is going to end up using LLMs to help with writing. The Academy already has a huge mess of rules over who gets writing credits. Adding rules about how LLMs can and cannot be used in the writing process, especially since none of it can be verified, completely undermines the concept of authorship. For things like special effects or sound design, making good use of the available tools has always been part of the process, but for writing, beyond spell check, machine assistance wasn't a big part of the process until now.
>>220270744>It hasn't exactly written the words for mehas it or hasn't it? you either copied prose it gave you or not
>>220270744I don’t understand how that concept begs incredulity unless you live in a favela or something.
>>220271070Its prose is kind of shit and stereotypical, so I've always adapted it. But Ive used chatgpt at every other step. And ive given it my prose for it to improve on.I'm not ashamed. I went 20 years of wanting to write a novel but not having the ability or the ideas. Chat gpt has given me that, and I do it for enjoyment. I almost certainly won't ever publish it or attempt to make money from it.
It's difficult to take seriously the organization that showered so much praise on pic related.
