Daria is a confused teenager who matured faster than most people her age. Her constant cynicism and sarcastic takes are just her way to cope with the fact that she can't truly relate to anyone. Even her friend Jane eventually grows tired of her because she never wants to have fun. I think the whole point of the story is that she goes through her entire youth without ever enjoying anything for fear of conforming. Her mother reminds her of that a few times. Daria is right about almost everything but she doesn't realize that it doesn't mean she should be an asshole to everyone around her. It was a really good show.
