Don't watch it or you'll be cursed to try find another movie like it and you never will.
The Ghost Writer1408
>>220282542It wish it was so
Polanski's The Ghost Writer is probably the closest in terms of feel, and some themes.. there are even some scene for scene overlaps (taxi cab shots, "kids won't starve" "you don't have any kids!"). That said, OP is correct the curse of the Ninth Gate is there are no more Ninth Gate movies.
>>220282547I know what you mean, there's nothing the same or as good as The Ninth Gate. But those two films are closest I've found to the feeling of 9th Gate

>>220282514In the mouth of madness and Angel´s Heart are probably the closest ones i can think off thematically. Tone wise i´d probably recommend The Game. It loses the supernatural elements but the atmosphere is similar. Same for night train to Lisbon and Ghost Writer. Nightmare Alley probably fit that bill as well somewhat...
I don't even care about the occult themes and plot, I just want comfy rare books being looked at in old rooms made of wood.
The Empty Man.
>>220282666i don't think so, but i enjoyed it too and its worth checking out

You're overhyping it and it will disappoint new viewers, just like the de Niro and hickey rourke movie. It was a tales from the crypt episode.

This is not related to The Ninth Gate, but it is related to that specific idea of>cursed to try find another movie like it and you never willI've watched so many movies that people have shilled to me as "like Riki-Oh" and they're all fucking garbage compared to Riki-Oh, what it does is so strange and specific and perfectly executed
>>220286030Well you probably got a bunch of shitty hk martial arts movie recs. Riki Oh is NOT a martial arts flick. It's a brutal exploitation movie based around prison violence. You'd want something more like ebola virus or dog eat dog to match it.

The Ghost Writer lmao. picrel lacks the occult but you will find the atmosphere satisfies you. It is very underrated Polanski kino from the late 80s.

>>220287973>Monday, May 4th. Another neckbeard walked into my office. He stammered on and on about this movie he'd seen and how he wanted more. Usually clients with gigs like this were after obscure pornographic material, the kind of thing they couldn't find even on the internet. >Not this one. It was just a normal movie to me, made by a famous director, starring a famous actor. Yet something about the aesthetics compelled this guy. He called it "comfy".>His money is as good as anyone's. I'll start asking around, see if any of my usual stool pigeons know where a fella could score some "comfy kino" these days.>I promised Sally I'd quit smoking, but this movie is tempting me to pick it up again.>That's when it hit me.>This movie is special, somehow.>Maybe I'll ask Father Mike. Later, though. Damn mick is too hung over from Sunday Mass to be up at this hour. Wouldn't want to get on his bad side. His right still packs a wallop. He could've been a contender for the world title belt if he hadn't joined the seminary.>Loves them kids just a bit too much.>I wonder if he would even look twice at a woman like this green-eyed blonde in the film. She's the kind of girl you just want give a big old hug to, the kind you'd pick up if she was hitching a ride and wouldn't try anything on unless she started it.>Like an angel.

I first watched this randomly late at night when I was a kid and was captivated by it. Forgot what it was and found it on /tv/ years back.
the truth is ive seen it too many times to really enjoy it these days. actually saw this bad boy in the theater when it came out and liked the feel of it but i think i dozed off multiple times

It gets a little cheesy, which a lot of people think adds to the charm but I think it's a negative. It takes away from the S tier atmosphere. It's one of my favorites still, but it had the potential to be truly great kino that it just doesn't quite live up to.
