Rian Johnson seemed to be trying to do some Unforgiven-type messaging about myth, where people's pasts are vague and prone to lionization, but it doesn't work in this context because we SAW Luke do the things that made him a hero. And the message especially doesn't work because the movie, while distorting Luke's character, continues TFA's glorification of Rey. The "subversion" that everyone talks about in this movie only goes in one direction: against Luke and what people actually like about Star Wars. There is no subversion of Rey whatsoever. On the contrary, the movie doubles and triples down on how perfect she is, to the extent that the other characters are trapped in an inconsequential B-plot.The movie is just awful in every way and made by someone who clearly is not capable of writing or directing sci-fi fantasy.
