This was particularly bad because the creator was clearly seething.
In the original series it's locked room mischief with the reveal at the end. When it came back it was much more Columbo-esque and it doesn't work as that.
It ended in 2004 with the odd special at Christmas or whatever. Then Sherlock came along and was much more massively popular. This is what made the creator seethe and it really spoils it.
