The original Resident Evil movies are really, really good looking visually. Strong cinematography, strong aesthetics, bold iconography. So it's really disappointing that the new reboot is so dimly lit and generic looking.
The reboot for comparison.
>>220302404>>220302527Hate to say it, and I haven't watched anything other than like half of the first Anderson RE, but the Extinction grid makes the film look oversaturated and its shot composition boring, while the Cregger one gives off scale, kineticism, and lurking evil. Don't like Cregger one bit by the way, so just letting you know you're making a weak argument here.
>>220302527This movie is so dimly lit that the official trailer thumbnail is gamma boosted. I haven't seen that since Alien vs. Predator Requiem.
>>220302527But how would people know it is supposed to be scary if it was all lit up?
>>220302880You'll never guess who the cinematographer on AVPR was.
>>220302653>the Cregger one gives off scaleWhat scale? It feels like it was shot in my backyard. There isn't a single interesting shot in the whole trailer. It's all just murky, underlit generic horror visuals. It's like it takes the worst parts of the cinematography from Weapons and doubles down on it.>the Extinction grid makes the film look oversaturatedIt's a Russell Mulcahy film. He always favored strong saturation.https://youtu.be/ZHwVBirqD2s?si=yIuw4x5tuMHDDo3G
>>220302653It gives off a dark small room, you fucking loser. Neck Nigger won't fuck or pay you for posting lies in support of his trite. Peele lost the popular vote with money, so Hollywood is hamfisting the next one. Fuck you. I won't even bump a thread so much as discussing this.
>>220302994Scale of the location. Space. It's immersive. You can see yourself traversing it.Want the clearpill? Cregger's shit is going to sell like crazy and they'll blow even more money up that hack's ass. The formula is too solid and RE is too popular right now for any other outcome.
>>220302653You need contrast. You need light and dark. You need dark scenes where you can actually see what is going on. This doesn't offer the kind of elevated reddit horror scares Cregger seems to be going for, but I can see what it going on and it looks visually interesting. I cannot stand this modern trend of dimly lit horror movies that all look the same. I can't believe they got the cinematographer from The Crow and Dark City and the Pirates movies for the new RE, and the end result looks so uninteresting. We used to have RE movies by the best music video director in the business. With visuals that are actually worth looking at. It's sad.
>>220302404>Zoomer revisionalists are gaslighting you into the thinking the RE slop movies always looked goodPeak clown world
>>220303027I can't believe this new RE cost 80 million dollars. Every single shot in the trailer is either a small room or a pitch black exterior where you can't see anything. The street scene is def okay, but it looks way less impressive than the Apocalypse street chase scenes and those cost half of what this did.
>>220303140I don't like any of those shots, I'm afraid. Well, no. 4 is alright. Contrast is obviously tricky to nail, but a lot of the work on display here lacks any subtlety.
I saw a reddit thread recently with an image grid of Weapons, and it was a predominantly black rectangle. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills with some of these modern horror fans who think that squinting at a dimly lit bedroom and a dimly lit street and a dimly lit living room and a dimly lit kitchen is the height of cinematic flourish.
>>220302404Looks like shit
>>220303232Cregger honestly sucks. This shit is from the recent (panned) Silent Hill movie, and it effortlessly mogs everything Cregger has shot.
>>220302404is color grading so you can make some shitty 3x3 all it takes for you retards to slurp any movie
>>220303174They were always really good visually. Got a bit uneven in the 3D era but still striking. Music was amazing, too. Hopefully Cregger's RE has good music unlike Barbarian and Weapons.
>>220303376RTSH has some absolutely beautiful shots. Visually, I like it a lot more than the SH2 remake. Rough CG in places, but it was low budget.
>>220303410Every RE film has completely different colour grading. Cregger's stands out in a lineup for being dim and looking really generic. Even Welcome to Raccoon City was better visually.
>>220303448Yeah. Crazy shit, though.
>>220303376The title card font looks shitty what were they thinking
>>220303211>I can't believe this new RE cost 80 million dollarsIt's impressive on how moderate a budget Anderson made his RE flicks. And they made really good money too.
I've come to the conclusion that the people who hated the original RE films aside from snobs were people that were angry at Alice (owned by the film studio) supplanting the game characters (owned by Capcom). That's it. Every dispute stems from that. Requiem shows that they don't actually care about any of the things they were supposedly upset about. They're upset that Leon isn't the main character. They're upset that Jill isn't the main character. Every thing those movies did is basically normal in RE now, even the overcomplicated clone stuff. And the fans are totally fine with it but still hold a grudge against the films. So what is the difference? It's very simple. Requiem has Leon. The Final Chapter doesn't have Leon. So they're mad at it. If The Final Chapter had Leon you would have endless fan praise for its gritty, grounded tone and brutal fight scenes and any time the hyper active editing game up fans would say oh you just don't get it, it's to represent Leon's suffering and fear that he'll die before he can make things right. These films are by most standards exactly the kind of adaptations that RE fans wanted. But they had a new main character, and that made them so upset. And everything else is evasion and fluff. It's not about the apocalypse. If the games did that people would quickly rationalize it.
>>220303376>hates weapons>loves the new dogslop silent hill moviejust kill yourself you baiting faggot
>>220302981nigger why are you just making shit up
>>220305573Weapons is a visually dull film with a weak script that is saved by strong performances and direction. It's rubbish as a mystery film and rubbish as an allegory.
>>220305639He probably got confused by their first name.
HOW MANY MORE THREADS CUNT
>>220305733I'm just in a holding pattern until Paul shoots The House of the Dead with my beautiful wife Isabela Moner/Merced. Looking forward to both RE and HOTD. But I expect HOTD will absolutely mog it in terms of cool factor.
I watched most of them a few months ago and i thought outside of like 2 scenes (one being the mexican driving into the fenced zone in the truck with a cigarette in his mouth and blowing up and the other being TRINITY OF BITCHES) all the movies after 2 were pretty forgettable. 1 is actually creepy and 2 is just fun
>>2203066565's opening scene is one of the greatest sequences of all time. And the ending.
I've been thinking about the reboot. My instinct is that it'll open decently, fall off quickly, make about 150M global. The primary issue is that despite the hype, it has no trailer hook. It has no memorable tagline. It has no viral elements. This is not Weapons. Weapons had masterful iconography, a masterful elevator pitch premise of school children going missing.Older RE films always leaned on incredibly bold visuals to sell the movie. The posters were always good. The taglines always clever. The marketing company has resorted to riffing on "A new dimension of evil" (Afterlife 3D) with "A new era of evil" which doesn't feel anywhere near as cool. There are zero cool lines in the trailer. There are no really good creature designs. It's all just middling. It's not bad, but I think fans are significantly over-estimating box office performance unless this thing has amazing word of mouth.
>>220302527>Cinematography Dariusz WolskiTHIS FUCKING GUY AGAIN
>>220302527the problem with modern cinematography>dogmatic adherence to natural light sources>aversion to use hard fill light>agressive colorgrading to maintain continuity between shots>lack of talent / lack of cultural context / understanding basic human physiology
We don't have an official poster yet. RE movies used to have pretty good posters and marketing. Nothing so far seems very engaging. There's no hook. Movies can be hits without a hook, but some kind of bold hook really helps.
>>220302404>>220302527NAAAAAAAAAAHHHH CHAT NO WAY CHAT WHY THE SCENE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY IN THE DESERT FINNA BE LIGHTER AND BRIGHTER THAN THE ONE SHOT IN THE DARK AAAAAHIIEEEEEHHH AINT NO WAY NAHH BRO TF????!!

>>220308667Because Russell Mulcahy knows how to light scenes, you can see what is going on. There is contrast, characters have rim lights. Older RE films are lit like a music video. 3 is by the same director as this.https://youtu.be/lcOxhH8N3Bo?si=n7skyo7J6ekHKurbThere's clarity. This new movie is so dark that they had to photoshop the picture used in the thumbnail so you can see the main character's face. It is not deniable that the older movies were lit differently to the new movie and the new movie is lit like a generic Blumhouse film.
>>220308777This is how RE movies used to be lit. People defending naturalistic motivated lighting are chumps. It sucks. It looks terrible.
>>220308832YOOOOOO CHAT I MOTHAFUCKIN LOVE DAT FAKE STUDIO LIGHTING DUDE A BLACK SILHOUETTE TS BE CRAZY ARTISTIC
