Back when this was first announced I rolled my eyes at what I assumed was a corporate project cooked up by A24's PR department, but my interest was piqued when I found out it's from the guy who did Dream Scenario.Overall I enjoyed it, found the visual presentation especially striking, and the soundtrack was nice too. Good performances all around, though I can't say Zendaya bowled me over with her acting skills; loved RPatz's nervous energy. Only sticking problem for me was "the reveal". I understand that the underlying concept is that your image of your spouse-to-be is suddenly and violently rearranged right before the wedding, and the kind of mental anguish that would cause. In this sense it doesn't matter what the reveal might've been, so long as it's jarring. Now while what Borgli went with is an intriguing idea, I just wasn't entirely sold on Pattinson's reaction to it. Admittedly, I don't have a solution to this conundrum: the secret has to be something bad enough that it sends the character reeling, but not so horrible that his overreaction is justified.

An idea I had for a change was that Emma brings a pistol to school, gets scared and hides it, but it's found by another student who then commits the shooting. That way you get something with real consequence. She didn't do anything personally, per se, but still carries ultimate responsability for bringing it there to begin with. Another idea would be her throwing the gun away some other place which is found by a kid who accidentally kills someone thinking it's a toy or whatever.The only problem is that guns have a serial number which can be tracked so she (or her dad) would be all over the news at some point.

The more I think about this conundrum, the more I start to believe what Borgli chose is ultimately the best option, you can chalk up the severity of the characters' reactions to the reveal to them being neurotic urban liberals. One idea I had is that it could've been about identity theft (Zendaya is literally not who she says she is), but that would push the film too far into foreign territory.
