I like Prometheus but the movie itself doesn't answer these questions. Behind the scenes interviews n stuff get into that backstory, all of which could change or be tinkered with, if there's ever another sequel of some kind. Within the movie all you can really do is guess. It was a strong starting off point, Prometheus, but that was dependent on the expectation there would be answers. Ridley shot himself in the foot with Covenant so fuckin bad, though parts of that are good. It was really disappointing overall because with that sequel, that was the time to get into answering some mysteries and letting the story progress in a real way instead of unremarkable rehashed horseshit. the Prometheus storyline, whatever was possibly inteneded, the ideas they had floatin' around, it could have been wonderful, decent at the very least. Covenant was meant to have an even bigger assortment of varied mutated monsters. They wouldn't have been just a bunch of drawings and preserved remains seen in David's studio. Anyway the studio and ultimately Ridley himself sabotaged the fuck out of it. Then he went on to do that Napoleion movie. Here's the thing though, nobody else is going to do Alien any better than Scott. In fact, it will necessarily be worse with the state of the industry. So there's no hope really. It will be shit.

It's funny seeing the behind the scenes stuff and the original script. There was so much more to it. Lindelof convinced Ridley to cut out a ton so it would supposedly generate lots of online discussions and arguments creating interest. Instead they cut so much out that it's a confusing mess that comes off as contrived with seemingly no answers (even if there are answers that weren't revealed). Making it into mystery boxes just failed super hard. Pretending it was a prequel failed even harder. Probably a rich varied history. Now what makes things interesting in one respect is that they mirror humans with the capacity for hibernation. Superior to humans tech. So what might this mean for their whole race. Because it also impacts humans when they do it. Ought to be worth leaning into this element to see it flourish with creative possibilities. Implications. Also, I suspect that whatever made the Engineer race, had even more superior tech. What might that mean. The return of the space jockey race. Robert Orci script so it was endlessly complicated and weird but originally did make internally consistent sense then boomer senile Ridley Scott cuts out the unfilmable chaff, keeps the gotcha scenes due to vibes, leaves the whole thing inexplicable and unexplained. With the sequel they completely change their entire premise again over to vibes and to shoehorn in “the original Alien monster”. Again, due to senility and complete disinterest in plot coherence, the movie doesn’t come together at all. A string of poorly connected seems-good-on-its-own gotcha moments.

Apparently there’s been a 10 year process of softly retconning stuff to be more intelligible but it’s boring as fuck now compared to the original premise.

Okay so the original script made complete sense and was Erik Von Daniken but what if the gods found an alien centipede that bred out the Xenomorph and sent it as a weapon to Earth to punish the slaves but the ship crashed and the alien creature lost containment.

Lindelof gets the script and makes it about space Jesus. The Engineers find the progenitor xenomorph, it makes a deacon, the deacons blood can seed life, they worship it, the Engineers are dying like the Asgard from Stargate, the deacons blood dies and the blood runs out, they try to make their own version of the blood but it’s black goo, but then they decide what the hell it could be a weapon.

Not a terrible plot I don’t know why they chose to obfuscate it all. Plus, some scenes are left unchanged from the Spaiths script and lose context and make no sense because the change isn’t integrated.

I suspect what happens is the “modern writers’s room” effect you see with D&D or with David Goyer. They put in effort upfront including some catchy buzz sections. They ride on past laurels and nepotism. After the script is accepted, they’re smoking so much weed they do almost no work and what they do write is totally inconsistent.

The original Lindelof script set up a cool sequel where you have this idea that the progenitor face hugger has some biological nature that mundanes can’t replicate. Exploring the esoteric side of that and using David as the “New Archon” who takes the corruption of the black goo and amps it to 1000 would have been a good movie.

Alien canon currently runs on a tiered system. Movies are tier 1 and are always canon, with tier 2 (currently recognized books, comics and games), are canon until a film says otherwise.

The current canon explanation for the Engineers, is that they revered something called the destroying angel, and that the Xenomorph is either that, or an attempt to recreate an older entity in order to hold dominion over it. Their experiments in this endeavour makes various humanoid races, including humanity and Acturians. One race they created, called the Perfected (think Gigeresque biomechanical people) attempted to spread themselves and their preprogrammed version of 'perfection' by spreading Proto-Hives (hives that make Deacons and turn artificial structures into living Giger hellscapes), and assimilating Engineers and their seed races. What followed as a war which decimated both sides, with the Engineers fleeing known space, and what remained of the Perfected hibernating on worlds they had spread to and transformed.

I went into the movie expecting an Alien movie which is just a slasher in space. I got that.

The whole black goo thing was just Ridley wanting to do a different type of body horror in his alien movie since chest bursters have already been done.

Since it's a prequel we have to make a plausible closing as to why none of this has been discussed with people before.
But it did well enough for a sequel so we have to do a movie that continues that story line but also keeps things far enough away from the original movie.

It's just not very good. Watched Prometheus and Covenant recently, and Covenant is better. The only neat thing Prometheus has going for it is the implication of alyium jesus. The action scenes in Prometheus are bad, the writing terrible. I don't even mind the first deaths very much, the scientists taking off their helmets, because whatever fuck it. But there's no tense atmosphere created throughout the entire movie. At least during the hilarious fuck-up scene in Covenant when the first ship is destroyed, you have great sound playing in the background to amp up the tension. There's nothing like that in Prometheus.

These effects rot somehow, a kind of dimensional shift where I see them the first time and the simulation puts considerable effort into making them look appropriate, but then when I revisit the record it has rotted in some way and become worse. This happens consistently with visual effects in films when seen multiple times. I saw Attack of the Clones in theaters and the effects looked perfect even on a large screen, and now they look like a video game, same film. I can't explain the exact mechanism but it's clear that things are changing around me.
