No. Everyone that's played the character since always makes mention of this; if they don't then they're being disingenuous and should be ignored and their depiction trashed.
It's not an exception, but a contemporaneous portrayal by the soviets was good. Not saying it was better, better than a lot of shit that came later sure, but "also good". Soviet Holmes and Watson were interesting: it gave Watson a bitter, ex-soldier bite and Holmes a kind of "almost crazy", sinister slant that was interesting.
But nothing surpasses the ripping of Conan-Doyle's words and Sidney Paget's art out of the page and onto screen like the Granada Brett portrayal.
It is and will forever remain the default Holmes.

No. Brett may have been a massive queer; but he made a terrific Holmes.

Thank you. I've been watching House and am so sick of the jewish plot points (Interracial, incest, divorce, trannies, gays) and I don't know why I didn't consider watching House's inspiration. I'm 15 minutes in and am already enjoying it.

Good Lord those are rather large.
>>
>>220310013
No. His portrayal is beyond excellence. One can only attempt to mimic his brilliance, or subvert it. Alas the attempt to subvert is an inherently conceited notion, and subversion therefore for the sake of comedy is absolute trite.

Why did nobody notice Jim Parsons was doing an impression of Brett’s Sherlock the entire time?
>>
Seeing as the Brett adaptations are pretty faithful, is it safe for me to assume that Conan Doyle’s stories are downright ridiculous and that for being “le greatest detective” there sure are a lot of cases where he just farts around until someone explains the entire mystery to him. Not a whole lot of deductions as the cultural memory seems to think.

Yeah, I know. But Hardwicke wasn't bad. It was just a shame and it couldn't be helped.
Hardwicke looked "too old" imo; worked for the later seasons I suppose, but he was missing the sort of optimist that the Burke had. I think the former worked as the "I've seen all this shit before" kind of older Watson that was all too used to Holmes' shit. I think Hardwicke was even recommened by Burke to be his sucessor, and he ended up as Watson for more screen time that Burke did.

Forgive the weeb example but there's a link: in Detective Conan, the VA for the private eye father character had a very distinctive, gravely smoker's voice with a distinct working class accent from a specific region of Tokyo. There was a big stink when he was replaced by some other guy for likely some bs contractual shit the nips don't talk about; maybe wanted more money and stiffed him? Whatever. He was so iconic that there was an outcry, but by now there's been like 700 episodes of the new guy, whose been voicing the character now for far longer than the original guy ever did, like 20 years. I haven't watched the show in years but in my head I can't differentiate the two when I think about it. Also the accent of the father? It's long extinct irl because of gentrification; it exists now only in the portrayal of this one character.

This isn't Sherlock Holmes. This is Jude Law and RDJ larping Victorian Era capeshit with typical Guy Ritchie trimmings. I truly feel sorry for the zoomer generation that grew up with this slop as their mental association with the idea of "Sherlock Holmes".

Not likely, Jeremy Brett and the Granada Television series is the definitive Sherlock Holmes by which all are judged.

most assuredly. RDJ sherlock is for poopdicks and poopginas.
>>
To even ask that question is heresy
>>
Nope. Jeremy Brett is Sherlock Holmes.

Simple as.
>>
>>220313304
Nope, that's not Sherlock Holmes. That's a Guy Ritchie fantasy character only named after the most famous detective in literature. It has absolutely zero to do with the original stories, which although written over a hundred years ago are still a fascinating read and stand the test of time.
