People hated this movie in the 90s? I just finished it. It was a ton of fun and amazing world building. The plot wasn’t mind blowing but the sets were impressive and the movie was fun.
>>
>>220312100
People didn't hate it. It just flopped. There were other neat stuff to watch.
>>
nobody 'hated' it, they just had other movies to see in theatres.
it's a "cult classic" which in hollywood means "most people like it and we don't have an easy way to profit off that so we'll try and use a scary word association"
>>
>>220312100
Costner pissed off the tribe, so they went out of their way to smear it.
>>
The idea of the ice caps melting due to human industrial pollution was so out of left field for the world we arrived at after the go go 80s that America collectively saw the trailer and exclaimed:
>GAAAAAAAY
>>
>>220312210
That wasn't in the trailer, zoomzoom.
>>
>>220312100
>amazing world building
yes it pretty much stops here, although in my salad days I built his catamaran out of Legos and pretended I had webbed feet
>>
It was a poor movie by 90s standards, if it was released today it'd be a 10/10 masterpiece.
>>
The coolest thing about this movie with seeing how everything works they legitimately go into visual details on how all of their gadgets and their boats work. It’s actually a cool idea.
>>
>>220312313
no it was just in the TV guide booklet at the grocery store, in rolling stone articles, and all over ET, stolen valor millennial
t. actual millennial aka Boomer fuck you, you goopy ass nigger wretch
>>
The movie is pleasantly bland, fun action. But they lost control of the story when it ran into huge production problems and the budget exploded. Then people went to see it just to watch 200 million dollars burn on screen.
They're still doing that today with Avatar movies, but it's not interesting or exciting anymore people just want to see what happens when someone makes a mediocre turd of a movie while spending enough money to front a moon landing.
Dennis Hopper was fun to watch but we've seen it before.
Then the little girl's monologue is so retarded that it shoves the movie off the kino podum.
I'm still down to fuck jean tripplehorn hmu if you kow how to get in touch with her
>>
>>220312100
We didn't know how good we had it when films like this floppped
>>
If you read about "The Bounty", or have seen the movie about that ship and the men that mutinied and lived on an island, and learn about the fate of the people that settled there, the ending ends up being unknowingly grim. Theres one woman and one female child and the inhabitants have no idea how they got there so cant summon fresh genetic material.
>>
>>220312100
>The bad guys are 'Smokers', guys who literally just smoke cigarettes.
Honestly the 90's tier propaganda was pretty corny.
>>
>>220312467
>the inhabitants have no idea how they got there
They followed the map tattooed on the girl's back, you donut.
>>
>>220312100
Now watch the Ulysses cut and see how much more there is to it. There's a lot more to the Smokers and what's going on in the movie that got cut out.
>>
>>220312467
Yeah so part of the reason that people think you are functionally illiterate is that you seem to mash ideas together into goo in your brain in an uncontrolled and stupid manner.
The Mutiny on the Bounty (which is how actual human beings familiar with the subject matter type it out) isn't a story of three people giving rise to a nation of inbred mutants.
Like, these two stories have some things in common (boats) but saying this just means you don't really have a full grasp of either one and don't have the equipment it takes to figure that out on your own.
If you can't fix your autism, maybe just don't talk so much because you're a babbling fat retard
>>
>>220312173
Anon that is not why they’re called cult classics.
>>
>>220312538
Ok, anon is saying that in Bounty the people on the island ending up murdering each other or meeting terrible fates. And similar to Bounty, the people in this movie will eventually meet die miserably. It's not a happy ending since just a few people living on dry land has no ability to prosper longterm. There, you've been spoonfed, moron with zero reading comprehension.
>>
>>220312570
Except the bounty mutineers established a functional society (with no age of consent) but the natives killed them all but kept the society.
>>
>>220312430
>But they lost control of the story
Why do you people make up this dumb shit? Are you unironically filtered by the fairly simple story of Waterworld that you find it incomprehensible? And you're proud of that? You should be ashamed to be so retarded
>>
I watched this with my siblings when we were kids. I had seen The Road Warrior (the only Mad Max movie I had seen at the time) and thought these two were related

Honestly it’s a cool double feature

Imagine being that one stunt person who died during the filming of this piece of shit.
>>
People had extremely high standards before the late 2000s. Movies that were trashed in that era as bad are literal masterpieces compared to anything that comes out today.
>>
>>220312100
I enjoy it. But the film was the most expensive film at the time, Costner is a charisma vacuum and the film was long.

>>220312316
I also made a lego ship,
>>
>>220312592
>I’ve spent years trying to translate this!
>oh shit it was upside down!
>>
cast full of uggo’s am i right?
>>
>>220312570
Okay, so when you came to the part of the other fat kid's post that says "can't summon fresh genetic material" were you just too tired to keep reading?
Can you tell when you have no fucking clue what you are talking about and aren't reading sentences all the way to the end, or is it just a big fuzzy undifferentiated world full of jizz and sugar to you?
Do you think the mutineers on the HMS Bounty ran out of food because they were "living on dry land" which I guess means standing somewhere on the edge of a giant ocean?
Like holy fuck it your'e this stupid by the end of 2026 you should gack yourself nobody needs this
>>
>>220312592
>But they lost control of the story
he meant the news story, stupid
Waterworld going over budget and buying all the scrap metal in the Phillipines was headline news back before you were born
>>
>>220312210
Take your meds, Greta.
>>
>>220312100
Most of the complaints were over it being >2 hours long. But the movie itself is fine
>>
>>220312586
>the natives killed them all but kept the society
ha ha what the fuck
it's like facts are muscle and made-up dumb shit is ugly fat, and your body is a little sculpture of your understanding of the world around you

It's a solid 90's action movie. I'm sure Red Letter Media will shit on it at some point, similar to Independence Day, then go on to praise the new Godzilla slop.
>>
>>220312100
It was one of the greatest experiences i ever had at the movies as a kid. Me and my friend spent half the schoolyear building wood replicas of the trimaran at wood working class. Then we put them on the river in our valley and sailed them around. I still have some bits of it lying around somewhere. Shit was cash
>>
>>220312570
>the people in this movie will eventually meet die miserably. It's not a happy ending since just a few people living on dry land has no ability to prosper longterm.
what about the map they used to get there
>>
It's mad max on water. Never hated it
>>
>>220312100
I liked it as a kid and I liked it as an adult. Watched the longer cut, forgot the name.
>>
>>220312728
>we want it to be even dumber and more stereotypically garbage!
>you added too much depth and thought into your movie! How can you expect me to pay attention longer than one and a half hours?! REEEE!!

Waterworld: The Dubliners Cut
>>
>>220312570
>just a few people living on dry land

>Character sails up to an island
>Looks north: eternal ocean he's been living on his entire life
>Looks east: eternal ocean he's been living on his entire life
>Looks south: eternal ocean he's been living on his entire life
Character: Oh god, I have no way to survive on this dry, dry, dry land!!!!!! I'm doomed!
>>
It’s not bad, it’s a fun movie. The problem is Costner hypes up everything he stars in / produces / directs as some grand masterpiece of cinema when in reality most of them are just decent popcorn flicks.
>>
>>220312100
great movie. dennis hopper is kino
>>
>two images on an image board
>>
>>220312208
This is really what it was. It was cast and crew of hundreds being miserable for months. Costner was beloved after Dances With Wolves. He made a big expensive movie that everyone generally liked to work on and it was a big hit. Then his ego takes over with Waterworld and does it again and sells it as "making a movie in hawaii" which was total bullshit.
>>
>>220312100
It’s just “Wet Mad Max”, but with a huge budget, because it turns out that it’s way harder to film on the ocean than in a desert. Also Kevin Costner is no Mel Gibson.
>>
>>220312100

Shout out to that based waterworld youtube autist "the atoll"
>>
what about landman? u can oogle the milf mother and the daughter 24/7
>>
>>220312362
yeah, the world building as well as the basic premise of the movie are both top notch. I also like how much of a chud Costner's character is in that movie.
>>
>>220312770
You joke, but I would bet Jay loves this movie.

I dont know why but the old man living in the oil hold is such a cool idea. It's fucking mean and cruel but it's a cool idea.

Every other week there was a classic movie being released in the 90s, and the tickets were only $5
>>
>>220314796
Braveheart came out a few weeks prior lel, imagine Costner seethed a lot over that one
>>
I hate everything with Kevin Costner in it
>>
>>220314853
now im picturing what Braveheart would have been like starring Kevin Costner

Apollo 13
Toy Story
Die Hard with a Vengeance
Crimson Tide
Goldeneye

All above Waterworks at the box office, below it but probably taking some of it's earning potential

Seven
Bad Boys
Braveheart
Legends of the Fall
Bridges of Madison County
>>
>>220312100
It wasn't hated. It just has a reputation of being a colossal flopper dopper
>>

there would have been a scene of Scottish people playing a primitive baseball type of game 100%

Ulysses Cut actually made me root for the Smokers because the Atoll citizens were even bigger pricks
>>
>>220315324
We used to have ideas, some of them original
>>
>>220315519
There used to be tens of millions of people living on tens of thousands of Atolls. The Smokers were the ones who killed them all off. The Smokers have an actual religion based on everlasting growth and look down on Atollers who try to be sustainable. By the time of the movie, the Smokers finally reached the end of all resources and had used up everything. Pretty bleak.
>>
>>220313656

>>
>>220315375
It would also be raining all the time from the global increased temperatures. Its.... a movie.
>>
>>220312542
I can’t even begin to fathom what his thought process was and I’m genuinely hoping it was a bit because I don’t want to accept that I come to a website with people that retarded.
>>
>>220312100
Yes, I was there. The mood was basically, “What the hell is this shit?” The budget had been in the press for a while and ultimately people felt the film wasn’t worth how much it cost. Kevin Costner as an action hunk was never going to happen, he was not one in Dances or Bodyguard he was just some boringly dead lay sexy dad type. And just as the film was coming out, the reviews said Costner drinks his own piss in the film, which was heavily ridiculed by late night talk show hosts. People really wanted a sea version of Dances With Wolves, not a white elephant that drinks its own piss. The pee stuff cost him men who wanted to be him, and women who wanted to fuck him. Costner’s balding at the time was also starting to cost him his sex symbol status. So yeah, people hated it.
>>
>>220312100
Ulysses cut is the best version. Adds like 45 minutes
>>
>>220315215
He's certainly not a great actor but he's very charismatic come on
>>
>>220317063
he's not charismatic. Listen to his narration in Dances with Wolves. He is flat. He's a plain inoffensive every man. He brings nothing to a role, which is on purpose.
>>
I always loved costner as an actor and loved his movies for the most part
>>
>>220317131

They converted it into a one piece, everything I ever grew up with is gone lel
>>
>>220312140
It only flopped because it went way over budget because the sets kept getting destroyed in storms.
>>
>>220314960
And in 2026 we got bupkis. What the hell happened? Why are movies so ass now? How were people able to make so many good movies 30 years ago?
>>
>>220312100
Audiences like it, but critics hated it because they thought that the most expensive movie ever made needed to have more to show for it, but you can literally see where all that money went with the set designs and everything.
>>
>>220315840
Now i am all depressed.
>>
>>220312770
I watched Independence Day last year for the first time since the 90s and it was indeed pretty cringe
>>
Watched the Ulysses cut recently (had never seen the film before) and was pleasantly surprised. Not a great film but a solid action with crazy sets and an interesting setting. I liked it as much as the average mad max movie, which is a fair amount. It deserves a better reputation than it has for sure.
>>
>>220318091
where can one watch this cut
>>
>>220317909
Independence Day is a PG-13 children's movie. That's why it's so cringe. I like how Mars Attacks! came out at the same time.

Sure, something like War of the Worlds is much better, but that movie would traumatize a child.
>>

>>
>>220312100
first half pretty decent
second half, utter garbage

if the film was more about the very strange world, it would have been amazing, instead dennis hopper starts chewing scenery and it all goes downhill. It was very very hard to film, that they went ahead with this shit script is baffling to me especially because Costner wasn't some bum.
