Tony just never seemed to click with AJ like he did with Meadow. He seemed to enjoy hanging out with him near the beginning of the series, but precisely when AJ needs guidance in direction in his life both his parents are absent. His grandmother dies and is quickly forgotten about by the family, Carm is emotionally cheating with the finook priest and Tony is off dealing with early arcs like Pussy turning on him. Meadow is, realistically, too interested in school and boys to hang out with her suddenly sentient tween brother who is going through his first existential crisis. Even Chrissy, his closest male relative in age, models that thinking and emotional intelligence are for fags and bitches, and to not care about anything other than FAMIGLIA and LOYLETY TO YOUR CAPO
